14 Year Old Cat Is Getting Skinny And Eats Very Little But Is Drinking Water.

13 year old cat, eating plenty but getting thin?

This could be many things: diabetes, kidney problems, liver problems, etc. Older cats frequently develop diabetes and even more often, kidney problems. A simple blood test at your vet will rule out these issues or confirm them. Cats with these problems can be managed with special diets. So its off to the vet with your cat to find out whats going on. Dont let that cancer answer scare you. Thats always a possibility, but it could be something simple.

KK doesnt seem to have read your question, since she fails to realize that your kittys thyroid was removed, nor does she mention the most common issue with aging cats, which is reduced kidney function.

My kitten looks a little skinny... eats a lot, any ideas why?

Well, I've got a 5.5 months old female kitten, shorthair. She hasn't been spayed yet but I doubt it has anything to do with what my question concerns. She weighs 3.5 lbs and it's normal for a kitten her age, I checked... but it worries me that even though she eats a lot (and I do mean a lot, about a small can of wet food and 1-2 small bowls of dry food) and drinks enough (sometimes I give her lactose free 2% milk too), she still looks very skinny. Not like starving skinny but skinny. Her ribs aren't showing but when I run my finger over them, I can feel them well under her fur. She does run around a lot and expends energy (she's an indoor kitty) but I guess I'm just worried. The vet didn't seem to think it was a problem at all. Am I right to be concerned?

My cat is lethargic, breathing a bit heavy, and won't eat or drink?

She's very thin, but she's been extremely thin since birth, so I don't think she's lost weight, she's always been a runt. She has fleas but I've checked her for signs of anemia, there aren't any, and she has little to no fleas anyway (only like, one flea bed along her leg, and I have only ever actually seen one flea on her, she doesn't scratch especially often. My other cats have quite a few fleas but have been treated for them. I was planning on treating her as well, as soon as I could get the money, as it's very expensive.

She expressed interest in her water but wouldn't drink it, she would bend down to do it, but stop. I can't take her to the vet, it's closed, and we have no emergency vet here, they all close after 6.

Is there anything I can do and what could be wrong?

My cat is skinny and weak?

She doesn't need advice from people here - she needs a vet visit. She's not old so that's no excuse. Call the vet today and get her seen. Shame on you for allowing this to go on for all this time. You don't go from "healthy" to "skin and bones" overnight.

Why is my cat starting to eat less?

I have two cats, and I have had cats all of my life.

1. He's probably starting to eat less because the temperature is heating up. We live in Texas where its already been over 100 degrees for several days. My two girls have been eating a bit less because pets usually eat a little less when its warmer. They also shed more. Cats usually lose a little weight during summer, too.

2. He might be tired of the food you are feeding him if he's been eating it for a while. Try something new and see how he does.

3. I don't want to scare you and make you upset, but, he is 14, and that is pretty old for a cat. My cat I had a for ten years (she was already an adult when I got her) started to eat less and really, I noticed a change in her eating. She began to get really picky, eat less, and ultimately, I took her to the vet. The vet said she is old, and in her case, she also started not to drink as much water. Shortly after, she was put to sleep because she had kidney failure.

4. It sounds funny, but, if he's not pooping as much, he might be a little constipated. Check his litter box, and if his poop looks funny, or there isn't poop when there should be some (if you haven't scooped or changed the litter yet), he might have some constipation. My cat of ten years was constipated once, and they told me to pour a little olive oil on the food and it definitely helped. They said they could have done an enema, buuut....the vet said it can be a nasty mess.

Good luck, and hope he's okay. I have two cats, and I love them, so I know how worried you must be. :)

If I stop eating completely and start taking in 198oz of water a day along with a few celery sticks?

and some pieces of turkey for lunch, and exercised lightly (I have an injury right now so its hard to exercise) Would I lose a lot of weight?
Im 5'2 and I weigh 160 pounds.
Ive been doing it for 3 days already and Ive gained 2 pounds, but I heard that in the first week you just gain a bunch of water weight and then you lose it after your body adjusts.
I know this isn't healthy, im just interested in what might happen. So far its not really bothering me, I feel fine, actually I feel a lot better because im taking in less sodium and more water then ever.
