How long should a laptop last?

I’m curious for those who are giving dates for laptops or components: where does your data come from? I am skeptical about some of the answers.I currently have an Acer laptop that is 6 years old:One of its USB ports does not work.A few keys on the keyboard don't work (within the last year), so I just use an external keyboard.I have seen no indication that the hard drive or any component is about to fail. The DVD drive works fine.I had Windows 7(? I don't know) and various Linux distributions installed and have almost always used Linux. I haven't had Windows on this computer for at least a year.I have 3 extra monitors, two 17" and one 19" that are about 12 years old that work perfectly fine.My last laptop, a Gateway, lasted me about 5 years. I used to travel with it a lot more than my current laptop (e.g. carrying it to university on the subway)c.I have been stunned by reading some responses on similar forums where people say their laptops, on average, only last like 3 years. I can see replacing laptops every 3 years, but only lasting 3 years?cI have used my current, 6 year old laptop almost everyday since I bought it. I often have it on for days at a time, downloading media from the internet. No bad hard drive sectors. No new noises. Screen still works. No indication that a major component is starting to fail.Using Linux, I never run into the all too common problem of PCs with Windows operating system getting slower and slower with time.I think a lot of it is how it is used. I rarely push the CPU to the limits, for example, so overheating has essentially never happened. I do move it around sometimes, but have a good leather case for it and treat it well.
