A Piece Of My Gum Is Hanging

A piece of my gum is hanging off?

Sounds like whatever you were eating cut part of your gum tissue, but didn't cut it completely off. If it's a small piece of tissue and it's almost severed, I would go ahead and remove it using sterile scissors, so it doesn't pull further (like a hang nail). If it is a large piece of gum tissue and it is exposing more tooth surface or bone, put it back in place and keep pressure on it until the bleeding stops and see a dentist asap. Either way, rinse with warm salt water or a gentle anti-bacteria rinse (non-alcoholic mouth rinse)-like Peroxyl or Chlorohexidine.

Piece of gum hanging over front teeth?

I know I am asking this again but I need more help about the issue, thanks for understanding!

I tripped walking to my car and hit the door handle with my mouth. Now I have a piece of gum hanging over my front teeth. If I move it it exposes quite a bit of one of my front teeth. What should I do?

I could pull it off but then I will have a screwed up looking tooth. Its a pretty big piece of gum. My friend said I should keep it in place and it will heal. Need help ASAP! I can't go to the doctor due to the huge snow storm.

Thanks!

Piece of my gum is hanging?!?

Well I have impacted wisdom teeth and I haven't gone back to do anything about them. Recently my top right side gum where one is coming in got swollen and now there's a flap of my gum hanging off it annoys/bothers me. & the same has just recently happened to the top left one. Why did this happen?? Should I go to my dentist?

A piece of my gums is hanging off!?

Hi there ~~

When you have a partially erupted wisdom tooth, it's very common to develop a flap of gum tissue over it. This is called an operculum. This operculum can cause problems, because being a flap like that, it acts as a little "cave", and can trap food debris and bacteria under it. It's a tough area to keep clean, because of the shape.

Sometimes, due the bacteria in there, you can develop an infection called pericoronitis. It causes pain and swelling in the area, and can get pretty bad. Because it is bacterial, it needs to be treated with antibiotics.

It doesn't sound like you have pericoronitis, though, thank goodness. If the wisdom tooth erupts into the mouth, the operculum goes away. If not, it can be removed by the dentist, though this is sometimes only a stopgap measure.

Your best bet right now is do everything you can to keep that area as plaque-free as possible, to avoid pericoronitis. Try to brush the area as best you can, very gently - using a baby toothbrush may be helpful. And use warm salt rinses to irrigate the area, especially after you eat. Hopefully this will flush out any stray food particles and may (with the brushing) keep the area clean of plaque. Rinse pretty vigorously.

If the gum starts to swell up on you, or you develop pain back there, get to the dentist so you can get antibiotics, and an evaluation as to the best course of treatment in your case.

Hope this helped!~~

What is this piece of my gums hanging and hurting in my mouth?

This could be caused by several things. Eruption of a new tooth, popping dental floss, or aggressive brushing.

If the tooth erupted just recently, it's probably a piece of the tissue that was covering the tooth and is being worn off. It will eventually come off with brushing and flossing.

Or it could be that you've traumatized the tissue with something sharp that you've "eaten" or during aggressive "brushing" or "flossing," this has cut a small (feels so much bigger to your tongue) piece of tissue loose, now it's hanging but still attached and this is what you feel.

My thoughts would be most likely, floss that's been "popped" slicing the tissue causing the trauma. I wouldn't suggest you pull it loose, this may cause more trauma. You can either continue flossing in hopes of cutting it loose or you can go to the dentist and let him evaluate the problem, and easily cut it free, painlessly. You can try to floss the area and see if it comes free but I think the dentist would be better since you are in so much pain from this. For now use some really warm salt water rinses several times a day and swish well in that area, this will help with the sorness and you may rinse it off in the process.

If there isn't any progress within a few days of rinsing, I would go in and let the dentist take care of it since it may be something I'm unaware of, since I can't see the area. Hope I've been of some help with this and good luck!

Part of my gum is hanging off!?

It's just from the molar growing in and will solve itself eventually. It's important for her to keep the area clean because food and bacteria will get trapped under the flap and could cause decay or an infection. Warm (about as hot as coffee or tea) salt water will help. Just tell her to take a mouthful and hold it in her mouth on the side that the flap is on. The heat and salt will help draw out anything that could be under the gums. It's nothing to worry about.

Hanging piece of 'gum' in back of mouth? wisdom teeth?

If your wisdom tooth does not come completely in and this flap of gum tissue remains, you will develop an infection called a pericornititis. It occurs because food and plaque get caught under the gum and you cannot keep it clean. The bacteria fester up and you get pain and swelling. This starts occurring more and more frequently and more severe each time. Then the wisdom tooth will have to be removed. At the first sign of any problems in the area start rinsing the area with warm saline solution every 2 hours. This may help stave off a problem. good luck.
