Is it illegal for dealers to post by owner on craigslist?
I work for a dealership, and ever since Craigslist started charging $5 per ad for advertising in the dealer section, I have been forced to post in the "by owner" section. As soon as I recieve any phone calls or inquiries on the cars, the first thing I make sure to do is inform the potential buyer that I am a dealership and all dealership fees will be applied. I have recieved several phone calls from the chamber of commerce and an investigative agency, (I have not answered the calls, but looked up the missed call on google and discovered that the numbers were investigative agencies) My question is, What laws actually pertain to advertising cars on craigslist in the "by owner" section? I am not in any way posing as a private party, and of course if any sales come out of my postings, the customers know far ahead of time that they are purchasing from a dealership, so I would like to know which laws make it in fact 'illegal'. I am sure I will get a lot of responses here from people who are highly offended at my posting in the owner section, But I would really appreciate any valid answers to this question, by those who are familiar with Laws.
