Ancient China And Ancient Greece Questions Help

Ancient Greek Question?

You've partly answered your own question.

Greek seers practiced augury (the interpretation of the cries of birds).

They also believed in the interpretation of dreams, omens and portents (unusual occurrences such as lightning, thunder, earthquakes, eclipses, etc.).

They also practiced extispicy (the examination of the entrails of animals for marks or abnormalities) and empyromancy (divination by watching the smoke and flame from the burning of animals entrails.

Ancient China vs ancient Greece vs ancient Egypt?

Which ancient civilization was more technologically advanced and glorious and which one contributed the most to human advancement out of these three?

On the Internet, I've seen tons of people (most of who I assume are of European/American descent who have no knowledge of ancient China) say that ancient Greece was the most advanced and glorious civilization in history, but they fail to even mention ancient China - a civilization that I feel many would argue was even more technologically advanced and glorious than ancient Greece. Regardless of the many people who say that ancient Greece was the most technologically advanced ancient civilization, I also read somewhere that, in ancient times, the Chinese were always ahead of Europeans, technologically, for a long period of time.

The ancient Egyptians are also said to have been the most advanced ancient civilization too. I'd also like their civilization included in your answer as well.

I'm currently somewhat ignorant on the matter. What do you more knowledgeable YA! historians think?

About Ancient Greek and China?

Ok, the Greeks tended to focus more on a democratic, or at least oligarchic system of government. Even in city-states like Sparta, which had kings, the citizens of the city-states were usually included in the decision making process and were afforded more rights.

In China, the landscape was governed by Emperors and their dynasties. Emperors had more absolute power although they did rely heavily on administrators to carry out their rule and edicts. Some Chinese Emperors relied on legalism to carry out their plans. This focused heavily on an appointed bureaucracy. The Chinese methods for rule were much more ruthless and suppressive than the Greek.

For the Greeks, the city-states often worked together in times of external threat. The wars against the Persians are a great example as Spartan warriors and the Athenian navy would often fight together to preserve the sovereignty and independence of the Greek city-states. Although the alliances were often strained, the Greeks did realize that if they did not stand together in times of crisis, they would be conquered from an outside power.

Hope this helps!

What are similarities between Ancient China and Ancient Greece?

Not much, Ancient Greece and Ancient China are of the most different civilizations. Still they did have many commonalities. Both had problems dealing with their own kind usually ending in civil war between the city states. Also both civilizations were convinced that they were beyond other humans (superior race) and they both were living on that thought with the difference that Chinese thought that they deserved to assimilate all other civilizations and integrate them in their own while the Greeks tried to alter foreign civilizations to resemble their own. Also they were both inventive and creative civilizations that managed to give humanity so much (thow they used their resources to invent in completely different areas, the Chinese in war & strategy and the Greeks in art, science & politics)

Too bad they never met in their glorious past. History would have probably seen the creation of two invincible empires sharing the world and unprecedented wars unlike any other... Probably just the knowledge of the existence of each other would result in unification of both civilization's city states...

Was Ancient Greece more advanced than Ancient India or China?

Depends on how you define great. If conquering and cnquests are termed great , then yes . If the self advancement is termed great then a big NO. The Rig Veda was way more enlightening than the Ancient Greek scriptures. Indian epics are far longer than Greek epics. History records show that Indian literature evolved before Greek Literature. India had scholars like Kautilya, Buddha, Mahavira before the Greeks had plato, archimedes or socrates in recorded history . Now I am going to give an evidence that will support my claim further. The oldest universities of the world were in Ancient India at a time when even the persians were busy fighting the greeks. Current dating suggest Taxilla and Nalanda to be atleast 200 years older than before. That would make these Iron Age universities during 800 to 900 BC and it existed till 7th century AD. By the time plato had formed his philosphies , Arthshastras ,upanishads were already written in India . It is much more possible that much of this spiritual knowledge travelled to Greece.Take a real life example. If you know the world’s best university is Oxford , would you go to Oxford or would Oxford come to you ? Do you realise why India never really went outside the subcontinent . Because they had everything here. This coincides with the Indain philosophy of know yourself first. The Greeks had a similar philosophy but they went outside . This shows that the philosophy formed much later. The Greeks are popular because the romans spread them forward and the greek revival scence. India got suppressed because of foreign muslim and christian invasions. Modern day Cognitive science implements Indian Yogasutras and the concept of Lucid dreaming also came from Indians and Chinese.Whether the Greeks are more advanced than Chinese , I do not know as the Chinese can only say that .

How did ancient greece china and japan prevent against earthquakes?

none of them had what we know as defensible archetecture, they all suffered terribly in quake areas and times. that what they did build was almost always destroyed.. horribly with ensuing loss of lives and structures.. they rebuilt in time as to erase the events of prior times japan is the leading one for theory, sometimes it works on a small scale, on a large scale, the results remain the same. ye olde greece is at the bottom of the seas(corsica was once part of the main land area)

Ancient Greek VS Ancient China?

i would think china.
they have flat bottomed ships called junks. contrary to the name, their extraordinarily sturdy and stable on the high seas.
a typhoon would wipe out any ships of that age, chinese or not so that's irrelevant.

they have super up to date navigational charts, they have the compass, they have rockets, aka fireworks with explosives

the Chinese have a immense amount of manpower, now and before. they were issues of rebellions around that time so I don't think they'll invade Greece. But then again, the whole thing is theoretical.

sure the spartans and great, but since china is the invader, it will get to dictate the terms. They have definitely more options than the Spartans. Siege, trade routes, blackmail, spies, enlisting other nations enemy of the greek, etc etc.
