That led to my mom telling me to get off my computer and go outside a lot, because she didn’t know that I was actually working on stuff. I ignored her and just kept writing.As far as technical instruction goes, I took a creative writing class in high school (and aced it) and I’ve read one (1) entire book on writing, that book being Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer by Roy Peter Clark, a writing instructor whom I very much admire. I’d definitely recommend it, because I learned a lot from it—not just from the tools themselves. I also learned to recognize how I used those techniques in my writing without even realizing.Overall, writing is like any hobby or craft. I would say there are several ways to do this. Firstly, on your assignments, make sure you proofread them. print them out, mark them with your editing, and do that again. youll notice bad habits in your writing and will eventually get rid of them. next, have someone else read them, whether it be your friend or parent. i would suggest talking to your teacher and going over your papers with him or her. that is honestly the best way to get better. plus teachers are always willing to help their students and they appreciate when you ask for help. most likely, your grammar skills are not where you want them as well. I would suggest just reviewing basic sentence structure, building sentences, and advanced sentence structure. there are many useful books you can find probably on amazon for really cheap. also, your english teacher probably can suggest or has a couple that can be helpful. that leads me to my next suggestion. get a tutor. many people get tutors, its nothing to be embarrassed by. they can help you on a more consistent basis, and help you throughout your writing process. they can also help you learn how to structure and plan out your essays better, which a key part of good writing. this is something that your teacher can help you with as well. also, another way to improve your writing is to improve your vocabulary. so, just try to read more, outside of class for leisure. i know youre probably pretty strapped for time, but just reading a book or two every month is easily manageable by just cutting out a couple hrs of tv out a week or just reading a chapter or two a night before bed. the last thing i can suggest is to just practice. the best way to get better at writing is by writing more...just like anything else you want to get better at. for me, i improved my writing by following all of the steps above, but the thing that helped me the most was having someone else read my papers. it really gives you a good outside perspective of your writing that can be very beneficial. its so easy to get trapped in your own style of writing and you could be making mistakes that you dont even know youre making. the good thing for you is you still have plenty of time to improve, just try to take advantage of all the opportunities that you have in high school. good luck! i hope this helps.
