Antidepressant Question

What is the best antidepressant ?

I'm going to the Dr. tomorrow to get prescribed anti-depressants. I used to be on them a couple years ago, (I was on prozac) but had to go off them as I lost my health insurance. I just got back my health insurance so I'm going to get prescribed it again - but wanted to know what the best kind was? (I also have some anxiety issues too) - I don't know if theres a pill for both or if my dr. will prescribe me 2 different pills. My biggest thing is I don't want to be on meds that lower my sex drive..which is what prozac did to me. It was awful.
anyways just wanted to know from anyone whos been on them which ones they like and have had success with
Thanks!

Questions for antidepressant users?

I'm a senior in high school and going to be evaluated for depression and likely prescribed antidepressants. I'm really nervous because my family is in law enforcement and we're a very anti-medication family because my parents have to deal with people off their medications all the time and they think it does more harm than good. However, they are very supportive of me starting because they want me to get better. I'm still nervous about whether it will do more harm than good. If you use antidepressants or have used antidepressants, I have some questions...this is aimed more towards people with depression because that is what I suffer from (I just don't know what form). If some are too personal to answer that's okay, but it would help me if you answer honestly and thoroughly.

How old are you? Gender? (I'm 17, female)

What were/are you diagnosed with?

How long have you been experiencing this disorder/illness?

What have you been prescribed with? Dosage?

What advice did the doctor give you about how to use it and possible side effects?

What side effects did/do you experience? For how long? Did they ever go away?

I heard that it can affect your sex drive? Has your love/sex life or sex drive been affected by this? How?

Does it affect your other emotions as well, as in, does it also make you feel less emotions, or make you feel emotional?

How long have you been using your medication?

How effective do you think it is in treating your disorder/illness?

How many antidepressants have you had to use before you found the most effective one? Why is that?

Any other advice you could give me?

Thanks :)

Questions about antidepressants?

I've been on antidepressants before citalopram 20mg first and then 10mg. I personally felt they made me worse I got really suicidal on them I was on them for 3 months and then decided to get off them because they weren't helping, the side effects are horrible: you feel drowsy, more depressed, suicidal, fatigue, lack of energy their just some of the effects when taking the medication. However everyone's different on meds so what doesn't work for me might work for you.

Question regarding antidepressant (SSRI)?

Either or both drugs could be to blame. Do you have bipolar II and borderline personality disorder?

One thing to note is that you can't just take an antidepressant like Luvox if you are bipolar because it can easily lead to mania. So the Abilify is what is keeping you from going too high and going into mania.

Your question is a little hard to follow- was your creativity normal when taking Luvox alone and then it went away when you started on Abilify?

Abilify and other antipsychotics (they are used for more than just psychosis) very often "kill" creativity, reduce energy, and are often described as "numbing." So it is common for Abilify to cause a loss of creativity and although it is less common Luvox can also cause the same problems.

You certainly should ask your psychiatrist for help and you need to make him hear you. What I mean is that often doctors ignore or brush off any complaints and that is very unfortunate. People with bipolar and schizophrenia in particular often go off their meds because 1) The side effects can be unbearable or 2) Often people get better and think they no longer need the medication and after they stop the problems come back.

Typically doctors will tweak somethings and it may take some time but the majority of people can have symptom control and minimal side effects. You may do well on a mood stabilizer, the typical medications used for bipolar, like Lamictal (lamotrigine). Lamictal is very useful because it has few side effects, it has antidepressant effects, and it is typically the standard medication for bipolar II.

A different antidepressant might be better, some of the properties of Luvox are fairly unique so that may cause more side effects or it may work better (or both) compared to a SSRI like Prozac.

Also a different antipsychotic may help although Abilify is basically the most mild but you may find a drug like Zyprexa (olanzapine) is better.

The most annoying thing in psychiatry is that everyone reacts differently and it can take some time to try different things. But I certainly recommend you talk with your doctor about other medications and hopefully you can get your creativity back.

Question about my boyfriend's antidepressant withdrawal?

I'm really confused about my boyfriend's behavior. We've been dating since last May. He has been taking Lexipro since last March, and a week ago he stopped taking it. Since then, his moods change a lot. One day he's really withdrawn and aloof, the next he's really affectionate, and the next he's irritable. He told me that he has had to reevaluate major life choices since he's been off of it, including his career switch. He even said that he briefly considered breaking up with me. I've been trying to cheer him up, but his unpredictability is tearing me apart, so that I've reached the point where I asked that we take a break. He says it's the Lexipro, but my mom says that it's really who he is without the medicine. Does antidepressant withdrawal really cause these things? Can I expect him to return to "normal'?

Can antidepressants mess up your menstrual cycle?
