Any Good Music For Today

Why do kids think that today's music is good?

Everyone has different musical tastes.
Personally, I won't pick anything up that was made after '98

I'm 14 and most of the stuff on my iPod is from when my parents were in college and half the kids on here were just being born.

Do you like 1970s music better than today's?

Mostly, yes.

But there was some pretty shitty 70's music, too.
And some of today's music is pretty great.

I think the difference is that in the 70's, it was mostly good jams were what were being cranked out of the radio,
And today, if you want good music, you actually have to go looking for it among a bunch of crazy sub-genres. O.o

Is there any good music today compared to 30/40 years ago, especially jazz?

I have recently become a Radio Presenter for a rather contemporary station. We are told specific songs to play, which are all rather new and very processed. That's the least favourite part of my job, as I enjoy the “older” music. I can tell you with confidence that the Jazz scene is in no way as big as the older generation. Most of today's music is rather processed and the talent it takes to make a Jazz song isn't really there any more. What happened to playing your own instruments?

Any good gay singers today?

ok, so im a gay guy. i love music, but i love music that i can relate to even more. i am looking for gay singers. who write about gay things. im looking for modern. i like Adam Lambert, Jay Brannan, Eric Himan, and surprising to myself, i even like chris crocker... .you gotta admit, "second to none" and "i want your bite" are pretty good. lol they dont have to be BIG stars. Jay Brannan isnt but i LOVE HIM! hahaha. so let me know who you listen to? :)

Why is rap music so bad today?

The artists just give people what they want. It's sad but it's true. I hate to say it but i doubt 2pac would be marketable anymore.

Why does music today suck?

I'm referencing the comments by the original poster...Tony. Did you say you are 21? It sounds like you are referring to the good music from the 60-80s plus some of the 90s. I used to be able to immediately recognize every song, the performer, etc. From 2000 on, not so much. I think that throughout time, there has always been no shortage of music that sucked. I used to wonder who decided what would be played on the radios (now-a-days we have the internet radio stations which might be different.). I think the choice of what we have heard was initially decided by a limited few persons.

Now, with internet radio and such, theoretically, things could be better. The average listeners can determine what should be played or they construct their own "radio station" as such. That's better in that everyone can have input into what is played or broadcast of the internet or satellite radio. What is interesting is that the selections of what one hears is not limited to recent music. Maybe this will be better realized when more real stations do fully embrace letting the public decide what should be played.

I tend to enjoy music that truly reflects real talent and that can be judged. A singer's talents can be observed - it's more than carrying a tune but things like vocal range, etc. These things can be taught. Certainly playing musical instruments is a skill that can be heard. Finally, I would say that most of the time, I like the lyrics to well written, as opposed to trite or unoriginal. Sure, I admit to some guilty pleasures that involve silly, as in trite, with little meaning, lyrics.

My view is that there is the notion of the test of time. Hopefully the music that stands the test of time for the first 15 years of the 21st century will reflect on what was the best and not a mere reflection of what reflects the actual blend of everything that defined this time period.
Just my Humble opinion.

Why is today's music such garbage?

As a trained classical musician with a big love of jazz and rock I believe there are several reasons for this very sad phenomenon. There are a number of exceptions to this but most pop performers up through the 60s were well trained musicians – Frank Sinatra supposedly studied and copied two people – Tommy Dorsey and the violinist Jascha Heifetz for instance. The Beatles were disciples of all kinds of music from classical to Indian and were serious about learning and performing it at a high level.Another thing that has changed, is that through the mid 70s the recording industry was wide open to very creative talent. There is no way a guy like Frank Zappa could ever get a recording contract now. Or Yes or Genesis or probably not even the Kinks. Those open minded days of rewarding and developing creativity, for all intent and purposes, ended in 1976 with the advent of disco. And then a few years later in the early 80s, MTV and music videos drove the final stake home. From that point on pretty much all that is allowed to get produced at a high level (excepting performers that were already established like Bowie and Gabriel etc) is dance music - and the performer must look great on camera. (Think Madonna) End of story. The third reason is that in the good old days (ha!) many people, myself included, just listened to music without doing anything else. Could you imagine? That art form is now largely extinct but there were many times that we would listen to a new LP by whoever and not utter a single word until it had played all the way through. Both sides. No texting, no phoning, no multi-tasking of any kind. No anything except our undivided attention. People can’t even do that in a live concert situation anymore! So now, mostly what we've got are a bunch of beautiful people, dancing more than singing, and being so overproduced that the actual performer doesn't really exist on the recording. All vocals are sifted through and re-synced and re-pitched. Could you imagine doing that for Ella Fitzgerald or Aretha Franklin or Marvin Gaye? No you can’t! And neither could they. Of course there are some special talents out there like Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga but sadly they are (mostly) forced to sing bad dance music.BTW, I have nothing against dance music, it's just my belief that it's not made for listening, only dancing, and we'd all be better off... if it stayed that way.

Teens who like older music: don't you hate music today?

I agree with you I'm 17 and dislike the majority of new music.Good music stopped being made around 2005.I prefer old school r&b and hip hop.Back then artist could actually sing and weren't just famous for their body's!The lyrics in music had meaning back then. And rappers could rap about more then money, hoes cars and cloths! It's as if most new artist don't know how to be original or just afraid to .And have no clue of what music is supposed to sound like. But it's not even just music all entertainment outlets aren't as good as they used to be especially movies and tv shows.
