I presume that you want to build a project for real-world use.The best SAAS platforms are either very broad like Force, which every company needs a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system for their sales team, or are very niche to meet the needs of a specific vertical.Building a cloud-based web app for the masses needs to address some issue that nearly everyone has. Homeowners might want an app for tracking costs, reminders of maintenance activities, capital improvement analysis (keep the old furnace and pay more per month or put a chunk of money down now to save money in utilities over the long haul). This is the kind of app that might have legs to sell to Lowes or Home Depot. Given the automation being added to new appliances, you might even be able to work some IoT into it. For example, hot water tanks are now shipping with WiFi capability. Couple one interface that collects and controls such devices with usage analytics and suggested maintenance alerts (change furnace filter every 30 days, flush hot water tank once a year). This probably is a bit of a niche since not everyone will buy into it, but it does have greater breadth.Building an vertical-centric app means that you need to understand the business process of the vertical that it’s to be sold to. yes it is. when someone send or receives an email. it goes thru a server, meaning somewhrere phisically then you can acces it on your pc or any pc. peer to peer is like limewire ie. an aplication to download music. you send and receive info ( even without knowing it) thru all the users of the application. oh, and client is when u use a specific software to manage your mail and download it from the server ie. outlook, windows mail, outlook express thunder bird.

In general difficult, you can try to contact 20 potential users and to see how many of them would like to try your product for free. Or something like that. Do a manually collected poll among the potential users. Than calculate how many potential users are there around, costs of marketing, operating costs and how much money you can squeeze from each. However, you can be wrong at orders of magnitude in any of those variables.

You could try working on preventing cancer through immunization. There's a whole class of cancers that are caused by viruses, and susceptibility is often hereditary -- there's something in the DNA that the virus interacts with. Most of these cancers are untreatable today. If we could immunize vulnerable people, they wouldn't get cancer because they couldn't get the virus, and they wouldn't need treatment. There is almost no drug company research in this area because immunizing people effectively stops the cancer, and there's no money in that. There's money in expensive treatments for cancer.Solving this problem involves a lot of crunching of DNA sequences and understanding how viruses change DNA of the patient as the disease progresses. One person's genome sequence is about 1TB of data, so it's a big data problem. You need lots of compute and lots of storage, and so it's well suited for cloud computing.A lot of the people working on this are cancer experts, not computing experts.
