Applying To Usf Tampa

Information on USF Tampa?

I am going to apply for USF for the spring semester of 2012.
I am an education major(specifically ESE and elementary) and I am a upper level transfer student from SPC and I just have a few questions:

1. Hows the food?
2. Can I get around without a car?
3. How much is the campus bus per ride?
4. What are my chances of getting a single dorm in Iota Hall?
5. Is it hard to get into the education program?
6. Is there "quiet floors"? For people who don't like to party like me haha.
7. Will all of my credits transfer over from SPC?

Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks!

What is it like to live in Tampa, FL?

I lived there for three years. Here is my take.Main negatives:Traffic is brutally bad, lots of wannabe NASCAR drivers and elderly people who should not be on the roads. Tampa apparently thinks more roads are always the solution, the bus system is laughably incomplete. There are whole parts of Tampa that literally have no public transportation (like New Tampa), meaning everybody has to drive, meaning horrible traffic. I worked at USF and it would sometime take me 20 minutes just to get off campus if I left at the wrong time. They are very comfortable with throwing poor people under the bus. The lack of public transportation is just the beginning. The school systems very much favor richer kids, they would bus poor kids to my children's school, but since no public transportation runs to the area (besides the school buses) poor parents couldn't attend any school events or make parent-teacher conferences. To get into the better math & science in public schools you have to pay a guy to come to your house $150 and give your kids an IQ test. Can't afford $150? Your kids don't get the good math & science.Crime is also bad in areas. Even in the better areas abandoned homes are often squatted in by people making meth and such. There are still many places recovering from the housing collapse. Violent crime surrounding USF was common. Gypsy crime is spreading into the suburbs. They will walk into your home, and then pretend it was an 'accident' if they get caught. It is not easy to get to the beach. You are realistically going to do a 45 minute to an hour fight through traffic to get to the beach. You are in a state controlled by gun nuts. It's looking like students at Florida universities will be able to bring guns to class next year. You will have roaches in your home, unless you live in an apartment high off the ground. The good:A great restaurant scene. Since the food revolution was late in coming to Tampa, there are lots of great new restaurants that are amazing. You can get to Disney in about an hour if you live in the right part. The people are generally diverse and bright. If you like hot weather, its good. The summers are brutal. I actually spend much more time outdoors now that I have returned to the Northeast.Suggestion:Live near where you will work.

What are some things that can get you into USF (guaranteed)?

Making out the application first! Then visiting the college. Also, if possible, testing (Accuplacer exam) to see if you have the interest to succeed in various fields that they offer. Interest survey. This is usually part of the counseling center.Study so that you can score your highest marks on your Math and English skills. Bone up on these on line. Start 3 months ahead and practice 3–4 nights each week. No calculators or cell phones will be allowed!!!! There will be pull down calc’s in the testing but only on some problems. Then after you have an idea for the chosen field you THINK you might want to enter into then a visit to that department and by showing an interest with the instructors that you may meet helps. Also, they can pull up your information that you have loaded into their records which makes you look serious. They want students who will strive to make it. They want winners. So you need to do your homework prior to talking to anyone. There is no guarantee for anyone in college. Graduation from a Florida secondary high school is a help. But they allow other’s to enter. You may have to pay for an out of state tuition supplement. Also if you are coming into Florida from another state better wait to buy your next car there as Florida has an impound fee that has to be paid for an out of state registered vehicle.REMEMBER THIS: “You are there to study NOT party!!!!!!!!!!!” Make those grades count for the first couple of years. Night and weekend courses are another way to build hours and GPA. Summers courses are a great way to help there also. Be FRIENDLY!!!! Show interest.

How long does it take USF to make a decision on acceptance?

It can take between one and three months depending on the amount of applications, and the time frame in which the application was submitted. Also, since you will have submitted SAT and ACT scores, transcripts from other schools, scholarship information, and other documentation, the school will not be able to make a decision until all information is received and processed. Expect 2 weeks to one month for all documentation to be received, transcribed, posted to your account, etc. After that it will only take a week or two for a decision to be made (unless there are unforeseen circumstances).

In the mean time, you can monitor the process yourself. I assume that you submitted your application via the school's website. If so, you should have been issued a U ID number. If not, you can apply for one now via the school's website. Your U ID request can be processed as soon as your application is checked in. Here is the link: http://usfweb2.usf.edu/orientation/share...

Once you have received the U ID number, you will be able to log into OASIS, the school's all purpose student website. Here, you will navigate to the students tab, and search for status updates. You will see what parts of your application were received, what are still missing, and how far along they are in the process. The page is slow to update, but it will keep you a bit better informed than just waiting for an acceptance letter.

While you wait, be sure to fill out your FAFSA information on http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ the school will use this information to determine what type of financial aid you will be receiving.

Is USF a good school?

I'm applying for the University of South Florida in Tampa. I haven't visited it yet, is it a pretty/new campus. I plan on studying Civil Engineering. And live in a dorm my freshman year, and maybe rent a house my sophomore through senior year near Bayshore, will it be expensive? Do a lot of students attend this school? How is the weather in terms of summer and winter? In the summer i'll probably come back up to Tennessee but i'm still curious. Thanks so much!

Should USF (University of South Florida) consider changing its name?

No, they should definitely NOT change the name.

All of us who graduated from there would have no connection to whatever made-up name you come up with.

When they put the school there, it was essentially South of the other major universities in the state, and was meant to cover all of the Southern half of the state. So, the name has history.

Anyway, Tampa State sounds a lot more provincial or regional than South Florida.

Hey, we all feel a little bit like you do about it, but that's stuff that should have been handled decades ago. It's too late now.

At least we managed to get the team name changed to the Bulls. When I was there, it was the USF Brahmins. You know, Buddhist monks? Of course, with everything going on in Burma, maybe that's not such a bad name after all.

Go Bulls!

University of South Florida Tampa or University of South Florida St. Pete?

It really depends on what you want out of your college experience. There are certain programs that are better at USF St. Pete, as someone else already listed. I won't speak too much about those because I'm not familiar with the specifics. What I can tell you about is differences in atmosphere.

USF Tampa is HUGE. There are lots of apartment complexes surrounding the schools to accommodate all the students. It used to feel a little like a commuter campus but this year all the freshmen were required to live on campus so I expect the campus life has improved vastly since then. The area around the school is not nice. I lived up there for 6 months and could not wait to leave! It has very little ambiance and culture. It feels like you have to drive forever to get to anywhere half-way decent. There's lots of pawn shops and sketchy characters. I actually heard a news report one day that said crime was up on campus due to "overflow from the surrounding slums". The class sizes tend to be large, especially in the lower-division classes. If you are an athlete it's the place to be, though. They have a great facility there. They also features on campus (not as good as UF or FSU but good enough). You definitely get the "big school" experience.

USF St. Pete is much smaller. It has one (but very active!) dorm. You get the recognition of the big school name while getting a smaller school experience. The classes are MUCH smaller. My brother went to USF Tampa for a semester and transferred to USF St. Pete for the next and he felt like they were two completely different schools. It's right on the water. The large glass windows in the library look out to the Gulf. You're next to EVERYTHING in downtown St. Pete - the Pier, the bars, the concert venues, the coffeehouses, stores, ect. It's is a MUCH better area than the Tampa location. They have a sailing team that seems to have a lot of fun, too.

Have you considered UT? It's the best of both worlds. It's located in the best area of Tampa. The campus is beautiful. The student population is fairly small. If you're a Florida resident you'll be surprised at how affordable it is!!!

What are my chances of getting into UF as a transfer student from USF?

Hey guys,

I want to apply to be a student at UF next spring.

I am a junior now at the University of South Florida (Tampa) and am a biomedical science major. Right now I have a 3.62 USF gpa and a 3.52 if you count some dual credit from highschool. Unfortuantely my SATs aren't too good, I only got around a 1000. I am apart of various clubs at USF, including the USF ambassadors.

What do you guys think?

Also, I was wondering about my overall hours. My total number of credit hours for USF would be 64 after this summer class before applying to UF. But if my dual credits from highschool are included, my overall credit hours would be 73. Will this hurt me? Or do they only care about USF classes?

Let me know, and thanks!

USFSP & USF question?

I've been accepted to USFSP and I want to try to get into USF Tampa. Tampa sent me an application update form and said that my acceptance to USFSP acceptance is not guaranteed if I change my application campus. If I get denied from USF Tampa, am I still able to apply to USFSP and hopefully get accepted again?

My stats are not the best, that is why I am nervous to apply. 22 ACT and 3.5 GPA.
