First, eye color is a complex trait and has contributions from several genes. For instance, 2 brown eyed people can have a blue (or green) eyed baby. Since brown eyes are dominant, many people do not realize this but it can and does happen.Second, we all have a common ancestor If you go back far enough. Over a decade ago, there was an effort to sequence mitochondrial DNA (since only the mother contributes this to the progeny - genomic DNA has mom + dad DNA) from people all over the world. Looking at the mutation rates versus the number of mutations, it is possible to trace people’s evolution and migration. Using the data from this study, the authors found that the first women came out of Africa and migrated to the rest of the planet. It has been several years since I read this article (published in Science, I believe) but I know it has been expanded on in recent years. The same techniques are used to trace horses, dogs, etc to determine where they started.

Blue eyes are fairly common. About half my school has blue eyes. I don't know maybe its just wear you live. My friend has grey eyes, I have green. I have a friend who has them & I LOVE them! I want them. She is the only person I know with grey eyes, so I'm pretty sure they are not common at all. I have ugly brownish-green eyes, so mine are really nothing special. I want grey eyes!

How rare are true green eyes?
True Green eyes are very rare. Brown and black are the most common, followed by hazel combinations and blue--these are all dominant genes that breed true through heredity. True clear Green would be next in line. True Violet and true grey are the most uncommon. They are extreme recessives and rarely will descend through generations. My eyes are true steel grey without any other coloration in them and they do not change color. It is a throwback color in my family, which is predominantly blue-eyed blondes and red-heads of Germanic and Dutch descent. The last member of my family to have my eye color was my great-grandmother D.D. (my maternal grandfather's mother). I was extremely lucky in that I married a blue-eyed man with a similar genetic background (he is Dutch). Our son, Connor, also has blond hair and steel grey eyes like I do. It is truly a blessing. I think green eyes are stunning. To know for sure, ask your optometrist.
Are hazel/green eyes considered rare?
I live in Canada, and considering my town is filled with Finnish and Italian people, there's nothing but blue eyes and brown eyes. Like last semester, my English teacher had us watch an old video about a teacher who divided her students into blue eyes and brown eyes to exploit that color does not mean people are better than others. She decided to apply this to us, and divided us, though my friend Angela (light green eyes) and myself (hazel eyes) didn't have anywhere to go. So my question is, are hazel eyes more uncommon than other eye colors? My eyes are a mixture, though. They start with a brown ring around the pupil, with tinges of yellow around the brown, a main color of green, and a dark green ring on the outside. Usually the green stands out very much, but on sunny days the brown and yellow make a statement. I'm told my eyes look almost orange on those days. So, are these kinds of eyes common?
