We live in this unusual circumstance where we readily admit that our education is failing but only for others, not ourselves.Alternatives. As a college professor, for instance, I never met a single colleague who felt that the system had failed their child at any level. That was largely because they valued the education and took an active role from classroom level right up to district level. If problems could not be solved, their children were able, like mine, to finish at an expensive private school.Vouchers. As card-carrying liberals, most of the same professors rejected the idea of vouchers to allow concerned parents whose children were in failing systems to allow their children to move to the same private school. (This despite the fact that there very university students were being advantaged by Pell and college grants, essentially vouchers).Achievement Gap. I have never met an Asian family that bemoaned the failing educational system, largely because their children were subject to cultural and family pressures that precluded their complete failure even in a less than perfect school. In several years of teaching GED students, I have taught one Asian; she had not finished school due to a learning disability. The “achievement gap” is real, even in cities with fine educational systems, and certainly reflects a failing family system more than a failing educational system.Two generations after my green grocer grandfather sent his first child, my mother, to the State College to get a two-year teaching degree, his grandchildren and great grandchildren are hitting the workforce with medical, dental, creative, engineering, educational, business degrees that were earned in fine schools (90% of them public) and even finer colleges an universities.A “failing educational system” is only that if it fails all. How was the GATE 2018 mechanical engineering paper?

Well I appeared for the gate 2018 for 1st time yesterday….. writing my review of paper a bit late…I gave the paper of morning slot…and overall the paper seemed easy.I would give my review subject wise…Som…..(8 to 9 marks)It was moderate….not so easy…some questions were formula based(of principal stresses and strains) but others needed some concepts.Fm..Moderate level….very less on boundary layer and turbulent flow part…more focus was on fluid kinematics. Even sprinkler problem was there…Maths (10 marks)Easy….very basic question from every topic like laplace,Rank of matrix,vectors,numerical methods were asked…MDThe questions from MD were different from previous year question ,because usually formula based question come from machine design but not this time.Apti…Very very easy…..even if you had brush up the concepts lightly you could solve it.ManufacturingModerate level….questions from CNC,metal cutting,Rolling,Drawing,were there….calculations were a bit tiresome.Engineering MechanicsActually this was a surprise for me as I didn't expect so many questions from this topic…questions from collision,work energy,circular motion were covered….overall they were moderate.TOM and VibrationsVibrations questions were good as expected,tom part was less…only on gears and gear trains,mechanisms….overall easyIndustrial engineeringNot many questions…i remember only one that of scheduling…but was easyThermodynamicsLess questions from this topic…1 from otto cycle,1 from entropy calculations,1 Rac question and some more….overall moderateSo this was my rough subject analysis…although questions seemed easy as the concepts were repeated but i would say accuracy would play a important role in deciding marks and rank…lets see what happens Next.Thanks for reading.-SHANTANU
