Audition Song For Hairspray

Audition Song for Hairspray?

Hi there!
OK,so I am auditioning for a production of "Hairspray" in a couple months, and it's for this professional theatre and I really want to be in the chorus or one of the kids on the Corny Collins Showw, and I am at a loss at what to sing. I have only ever done community theatre and school theatre(Although when added up those productions equal many).
So, anyhows, my question is what should I sing? I am a tenor/baritone and need two songs, one ballad one uptempo. They have to be from a musical and should be something memorable and not overused like "Dancing Through Life" from "Wicked".
Thanks!!

What is a Good audition song for Hairspray?

I would suggest for Hairspray that you sing a 1960s pop song, preferably from the Motown genre. Here is a list of the top 100 motown songs & you can listen to the top 50. http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/be...
Sing one that fits your voice & the character.

Audition song for Penny in Hairspray?

I'm auditioning for Hairspray soon, and really want Penny! I'm 17, and a soprano, but have a belt. I've been starting to think about audition songs, and these are the choices I have:

- "Raise the Roof" ~ The Wild Party
- "Pulled" ~ The Addams Family (my only reservations about this is that it's currently on Broadway)
- "I Don't Know How to Love Him" ~ Jesus Christ Superstar
- "Notice Me, Horton" - Suessical
- "Suddenly, Seymour" - Little Shop

Some of these songs go really well with the kind of character Penny is, while others don't. I picked the ones that don't go well with the character of Penny because they show off my voice, but the other songs also do. So, that's my dilemma: do I pick a song that matches the character I want, or one that just shows my voice?

Please let me know what you think of the song choices! Thanks everyone! :)

Good audition songs for Hairspray!!?!?

I'm auditioning for these parts too for my school. Before I found out they wanted us to sing the character's songs, I already had my audition songs picked out. I decided that the best kind of song for Hairspray would be an authentic 60's song that went with their character. For Penny: "Gee Whiz". It's about this girl who's totally transfixed by a boy. Kerry Butler who originated the role used this as her audition song. (If you youtube Kerry Butler Gee Whiz, you can see how she did it) For Amber, something from a girl group would be great. My first thought on what would suit her well was "My Boyfriend's Back" and "It's My Party" because they're cute, sassy, and white bread with some sparkle.

Penny from "Hairspray" audition song?

You shouldn't do anything from Wicked because those songs are generally thought of as too overdone. Also, don't use a song from Hairspray unless the director specifically asks for it. Here are some suggestions that would work for the style and character of Penny:

Woe is Me (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee)
Let's Hear It For the Boy (Footloose)
Somebody to Love (We Will Rock You)
Pulled (The Addams Family)
Morning Person (Shrek The Musical)
Notice Me Horton (Seussical)

What's a good song to sing for a 'Hairspray' audition?

I'm auditioning for the Professiong Australian production of 'Hairspray' and I'm going for the role of Tracy. I'm a top Soprano, but my belt is at it's best in the Mezzo area.
What are some good songs I can sing that are musical theatre esq, whilst being contemporary at the same time. The song should also be rather unknown.

**IMPORTANT AUDITION!! PLEASE HELP!!

Good MALE audition songs for Hairspray?

My school is putting on HAIRSPRAY this year. I've been involved in my school's shows all of my highschool career, and this is my senior year so I have to be in. I'm a white male, not being ignorant, but I know how my director casts so I'll be up for white male parts only. I'm not an AMAZING singer but I'm good. I won't be getting Link, but maybe I'll get something else. What are some good audition songs that are relevant to the style of music in Hairpsray. I want to sing something that is similar to the music so that it she shows I'd be a good choice for the show. I'm not gonna sing something extremely depressing for a show like Hairspray, so what are some good songs i can use?! PLEASE HELP

What are good audition songs for Hairspray?

I recently performed in Hairspray as Amber, so I will help as much as I can. Don't worry about the age; auditions are based on talent. :) I was one of the youngest in the cast, but I got a lead role, though it does take time to get a good role (I have been in nearly 15 musicals, but I have only had two lead roles). Anyway, don't worry; just show your skills.

Forget You is a really fun song, but it's not exactly a song that would work well for an audition where you want to look put together and mature. I suggest singing a song from the show. I'm an alto as well. It's not easy to find an alto song in Hairspray, but I suggest "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" or "You Can't Stop the Beat". I actually sang "Mama" for a different audition, and it went really well - just make sure that you drop some of the super soprano parts down an octave.

As for tips on acting, just watch the 2007 movie (it's much closer to the 2002 musical than the original film) and imitate the actors. BUT don't forget to make the characters your own. Differences do exist between the musical and movie, so don't be worried if you get into the audition and you have to read a scene that you haven't seen in the movie (ex: dodgeball or prison scenes). Merely focus on staying in character.

As for tips on dancing, there's not much that I can tell you. I have never taken a professional dance class, but God blessed me with natural talent. If any opportunities arise between now and the audition for you to learn some choreography somewhere, anything will help. At the audition, they will probably teach you something, but having experience learning other choreography beforehand will help. If you're not able to learn any, just have confidence and be certain that you learn the dance. If the choreographer is going too quickly, ask him/her to slow down so that you can learn it properly.

Break a leg! I hope this helps, and I hope your audition goes really well! Let us know how it goes :)

Does anyone know a good male audition song for Hairspray?

This summer, a local theatre in town is putting on a production of "Hairspray." I'm a baritone, but I could do something that goes into tenor. Well, I'm a caucasian teenager, so the character I'm looking to go for is Link Larkin. For the audition, I need to have 32 bars of music from a musical "similar in style and character" to Hairspray. Does anyone have any good ideas?
Thanks.
