Bad Gas Mileage 2002 Ford Focus Help

96,000 1.4 Ford Focus, Bad Mileage?

This would be my boyfriends second car, His first car was a fiat punto 5 years old, 56,000 miles £800 , backbox fell off, exhaust pipe fell off, window wipers broke, water pipe burst, handbreak doesnt hold, powersteering is broken, gear nob fell off, rusting and paint chipping, before we bought this car we never knew any of this we've only had the piece of **** for 4 months. Now we're looking into a 1.4 Ford Focus. The year it was made was 2002. It has 96,000 miles of the clock however considering it's age its under the average mileage. The asking price is £1300, is it worth it when the miles are high ? it's only just passed its MOT and the owners are reparing an advisory for us 'Wheel ball Bairing'.

What'd you think?

2006 Ford Focus ZX5 bad gas mileage?

could it be you have a heavy foot? hows your brake mileage? try this, disconnect your battery over night. this will clear all adaptive strategies and learned bad driving habits that you may have made the computer learn. reconnect and drive the speed limit or as close as you can stand to it, take off slowly and anticipate stops by lifting off the gas instead of braking at the last moment. drive as smoothly as possible for 2 weeks, recheck fuel mileage you may pick up as much as 2.5 miles per gallon. if there is no change its as good as its gonna get. make sure you keep your tires properly inflated and keep a clean air filter.

Bad Gas Mileage on Ford Focus 2004, any suggestions?

Just bought a used Ford Focus, 2004, Automatic, 2.3L Engine, 66k Miles, and the gas mileage is horrible. It is 16MPG. Any suggestions on how to improve the MPG and/or troubleshoot the problem? Other than that, the car runs fine.

What mods can i Make to my Ford Focus to increase Gas mileage?

you can add the short air intake and the header exhaust pipes. I've had both done and it (a) increase power (b) increased MPG (just a little).

There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

(1) spark plugs
(2) spark plug wires
(3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).
(4) new air filter
(5) PCV
(6) correct tire pressure
(7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items
(8) spray clean MAF sensor.

=====
Forget all those "SAVE GAS" scams. This was on NBC morning TV show. The difference is as much as 38% (their claim). There are very simple rules to save gas:

(1) drive slow - not too much past 55
(2) accelerate slowly
(3) don't brake unnecessarily
(4) use cruise control - whenever it is safe to do so.

Don't coast - it is NOT safe (to coast in Nuetral) and it does NOT save gas. It only saves gas, if you are planning to slow down (exiting, tolls, traffic). Coasting then accelerating again is LESS efficient than just cruising.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic). That's 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles). Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

WOW !!

As simple as that...

Good luck...

EXTREMELY poor gas mileage on 2000 Malibu?

Sounds like the the ECT (the engine coolant temperature sensor) or the IAT (the intake air temperature sensor) may not be working properly. My first suspicion would be that it is the IAT (aka manifold air temperature (MAT) sensor) which is not working properly because you would notice by the temperature gauge if the ECT is reading too cool, although if your car has a temperature light rather than a temperature gauge then you would not have any indication if the ECT is reading too cool. Both the ECT and the IAT sensors signal the computer to lean the air/fuel mixture as the engine temperature rises to it's normal operating temperature and the computer will not properly lean the air/fuel mixture as the engine warms if one or the other fails. That will cause the engine to run at a richer than necessary air/fuel mixture and if that is happening then it won't be long until the spark plugs, EGR valve, or oxygen sensor fouls with carbon and throws the check engine light on. I suggest you have the ECT and IAT sensors tested.

What kind of gas do i use in my ford focus?

Basically all Ford Focus Cars use , Regular/87 Octane ...same thing.

Unless you have the SVT (higher horsepower performance Ford Focus) which I will almost 100% GUARANTEE you do not, not many people do......just use 87 Octane it is the factory reccomendation for your car....you should find this by the gas tank lid door that opens or in your manual.

You have a 2.0L 4Cylinder Engine in your car it needs 87octane

Also http://www.FuelEconomy.gov a car site that I use all the time that gives the real fuel milage ratings of cars not the lies that when you buy a new car comes on the windshield sticker....well this site if you had any doubt tells you what your car uses as well as fuel milage.

here is the direct link to your vehicle on that site....http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/17548.shtml

you can change the year if you like i just linked to 2002....there is no difference in year as to what the Focus' use for gas octane....other than stated above SVT which is now not available.

Terrible gas mileage for 2002 Ford Mustang?

its probably not your car, but you might want to dump a high quality injector cleaner into the tank. The gasoline quality is getting worse by the day and the weather is getting hotter. Take it out of town and blow the cobs out as well it could be getting carboned up and that will affect mileage as well. Good luck!!!

My 2001 Ford Ranger get's terrible gas mileage. Why ?

Your little pickup truck is not the most aerodynamically efficient vehicle in the world, and the 4 liter engine is the largest one offered in that model year truck. If you actually are getting between 14 and 17 MPG, you're doing better than most 12-year-old pickup trucks.

If you want good gas mileage, then buy a Prius or some other small econobox sedan.

2006 Explorer V6 with low gas mileage, is something wrong?

Your methodology and tool you are using to obtain your information are both flawed. What you need to do is manually calculate the mileage over at least three, preferably five, tanks of fuel. Your vehicle is only rated for 13 MPG around town, so when you take cold weather and fuel that contains ethanol into account, 11.3 MPG is in the ballpark. Coincidentally the V8 model of the same vehicle is also rated at 13 MPG around town.

Edit: The official EPA estimates for the 2006 Ford Explorer V6 are 14/19 for the 2WD version and 13/19 for the 4WD version. Keep in mind that in 2008 the EPA changed their methodology to be more realistic. The original 15/21 MPG estimate is no longer valid.
