Blood Donation Concern

Is it normal to develop a constant thirst only a couple days after donating blood? Concern for diabetes too.?

I ask because I donated blood 3 days ago as of now, and just yesterday, a feeling of being thirsty nonstop came on and has been going on since. My other concern is that I've read that many thirst symptoms tend to point to the onset of diabetes. And while I don't seem to be experiencing unusually frequent urination, I am considered overweight around the midsection. The thirst is the only potential diabetes symptom.

I realizing the timing of the thirst could be related to the blood donation, but the bigger fear is just the coincidental timing of it. I'm 33 (34 in 12 days) years old, 5'11" and 209 lbs (Trying to lose weight)

So the question in question is: Is this thirst likely related to having donated blood or a coincidental indicator that I might be developing diabetes?

For those who would say get tested, I plan to do just that because this is one condition I'd really not want to have to live with. And it's my hope that if my blood glucose level indicates it, that it can be reversed before it becomes permanent.

Numbness after donating blood?

No need for concern. As you lose plasma and cells from a donation, sometimes your calcium level falls a little, and this is what causes the pins/needles/"asleep" feeling. I do pheresis, where they take the cells and give the plasma back. This is a common side effect of pheresis, and they tell me to chew some Tums... it really works. Puts the calcium back in the system, and stops the funny feelings.

Good luck!
Welcome to blood donation.
I've given 52 pints.

Blood donation and contraceptive implant?

the physicians note will not be useful in your attempt to donate blood donor center go by their own guidelines, but with I can tell you birth control does not prohibit you from donating blood, and it is a surgical incision done by a licensed professional under sterile conditions as long as you are all healed, and released from your doctors care you should not have any problems donating blood =) I currently work in a blood donor center and have been for some time now I work in the US but I know most donor center guidelines in every country are basically the same when it comes to medications and medical conditions.

Why does my blood clot when I donate blood?

Although another poster mentioned anemia as a possible cause, blood donors must have a hematocrit (blood iron) of 38 or higher to donate. Your hematocrit is checked via a fingerstick before you give blood. Normal female HCT is 35-45, so if you were allowed to donate blood your HCT is fine.

Dehydration can indeed cause this to happen, but usually not twice in a row.

You don't mention your age, health status, or medications. I see from a previous Question you have taken birth control pills for over 20 years and have just finished taking antibiotics for an infection.

You may want to schedule an appointment with your physician and discuss with him/her what's happening when you donate blood. The blood bank is not allowed to evaluate, diagnose, or even suggest that you might have a health problem, but the screening they provide can help you go to your physician for further help.

I am a platelet donor and have been donating blood for 20+ years. Please see your physician with this concern; there are many, many reasons your blood may be clotting improperly.
