Bought Vehicle From Private Dealer

Used Car - Dealer or Private Seller?

A private seller is your best option. Most car sales people are dishonest and will tell you anything just to get you to buy the overpriced vehicle that is on the dealer lot. When dealing with a private seller, make sure to meet the person at his/her residence and ask to see his/her ID and compare it to who is listed on the title. Also be sure that the car's serial number (VIN#) matches what is listed on the title. $5,000 should get you a nice car from a private seller. I recently purchased a 2002 Taurus wagon in perfect condition for under $5,000. You can also find recent model Mazda Proteges and Nissan Sentras for around $5,000.

Buying a car - private party or dealer?

when you buy from a dealer you generally get a decent warranty and the dealer will have already tuned up the car so it is in good running condition.
Buying from an individual can be less expensive but gives no guarantees on the condition of the car and you will not get a warranty unless the original manufacturers warranty is still in effect.

either way you decide to go you should still have the vehicle checked out by an independent mechanic.

I just bought a car from a private dealer on Craigslist & it just broke down. Can I get my money back?

Unless you have a written warranty, all private party sales are assumed to be as-is, where-is, how-is, and any other "is you can think of. You do not even have any recourse against the mechanic, because you were not the one who paid him!

You should have had the car checked by your own mechanic prior to purchase.

With any car, there can be a failure at any time. It is impossible to be able to predict when a component is going to fail! If the car was running well when you bought it, the mechanic was telling the truth! I have had cars that were running perfectly one minute die and have to be towed in the next.

Have the car towed in and find out what the problem is. It may be something minor. No matter what the problem, you are the one who will have to pay for the repair! You do not have any right to a refund.

Bought a car from a private seller and got scammed, do I have a chance to get my money back?

Texas has Rebuilt Vehicles, also known as Prior Salvage. What this means is that someone bought a wrecked car that has a salvage title, put money into the car, had it inspected by the Texas DMV (assuming it was a Texas salvage title in the first place) then got a new title.Rebuilt VehiclesThere isn’t anything illegal about what the reseller did. He had a title in hand and sold you a vehicle based on the information that you saw when you bought the car. That isn’t fraud and isn’t prosecutable. If the reseller was a licensed car dealer - used and/or new - then they do not have to title the vehicle to re-sell it. They sign the back of the title as a transfer. That is legal. They do not title the vehicle to resell it, nor do they pay tax on the purchase of the vehicle. They pay tax on their profits from the sale.If you bought the car from a private seller, then what they did was illegal by not paying taxes on their purchase before selling it to you. That is called skip titling and it is a form of tax fraud.I don’t recommend buying a skip titled vehicle. If you had gotten a CarFax report, you may have found the information that the car had been previously declared salvage. CarFax is pretty good, but not infallible. If you did get a CarFax and their report to you was incorrect and you bought the car they provided a report on, then you could get money from CarFax for their report being incorrect. There is a lot of information missing in your question. If you fill in more of your story, you will get better answers.

Should I buy a used car from a private seller or a dealer?

Hello, I am a college student and I have been saving up my money many years to purchase a car. My poor hardworking father bought me one a few years ago as a surprise and the jack *** who sold it to him knew it was a lemon car, no shame in people anymore... anyway... it lasted me 5 months and then it was no good... we were so heartbroken, all that money down the drain. Well now I have enough for a decent car, but for me even $100 is a lot so a few thousands is a tremendous deal for me. I am now paranoid to purchase a car from a private seller, but purchasing one at a dealer would mean I would have to finance a vehicle and only be able to put a good chunk down payment on it... meaning I would be paying more money. :/ What do you think? People who have worked at dealers and know the dirty secrets of used cars, and people who have had bad experiences at either private, dealer, or both. Please suggestions! I need help. This is a huge decision, I cannot afford to purchase another vehicle if this one comes out to be no good... Thank you so much.

Buying a car from private seller that they bought in auction?

The first thing you want to be sure of is the title situation on the vehicle. Make sure that the seller has the title in their name, and is not trying to sell you the car with just auction paperwork. Unless you are a licensed dealer, you have to have a vehicle titled in your name before you can legally sell it. If there is a problem(such as the car being reported stolen) and the seller was not the legal titled owner, you could loose your car and the money you paid.

If the seller bought the car, titled it and then is selling it, there is no problem. Some people will buy a car, do some repairs on it, and sell it after a few months in the hope of making a profit. Most states allow a private seller to sell a few vehicles a year without getting a dealer license, as long as the car is titled in their name, and tax is paid.

Have any used car you are considering checked out by your own qualified mechanic prior to purchase. Autochek and Carfax are not a substitute for a hands on inspection.

Buying used car: Dealer or Private Seller?

That might be true but a dealer is going to make a profit.
a lot of private parties just want the car out of the drive way..

It does take checking either way you go smell the oil and transmission fliud to see if it is burnt smelling..look at the dip sticks there will be a yellow look if oil has been burnt..
don't buy these.

If car has clean oil ask when oil has last been changed if they say not lately ,then it goes thru it too fast ..

Listen for ticking motor not good..

Maybe look up some buyers tips because there is plenty to beware for which ever way you go..

If I purchase a used car through a private dealer, am I able to purchase an extended warranty from the car manufacturer?

Nope. The manufacturer demands that all used cars go through an inspection process which is kept on record. They have an understanding on what the vehicle needed to be done to it.Lets say you bought a Toyota from a private dealer. Toyota doesnt know anything about that car. They dont have an inspection record or anything. They dont know if the car has a bad transmission, needs engine work, if the AC works etc etc. They wont sell you a $2,500 warranty then wind up putting in $8,000 worth of warranty work to replace the transmission, or the engine etc.

Private seller purposefully lied about condition of vehicle, what recourse do I really have?

1. YES they did in fact lie about their names. Their actual names do NOT match the name on the title of the car.

2. I'm not a moron, my boyfriend is. Thanks.

3. I don't care if a used car by private seller is always "as is" when it is NOT legal in the state of Nevada to avoid disclosing any problems the car has and deny so when asked.

4. I know there should have been a vehicle inspection. I wasn't there to begin with thank you.

5. I have already sent them a copy of the certified letter through mail, 10 days to respond

Basically the point is you have people deliberately falsifying information and jumping title. So with that I'm hoping the judge will make an example of them. Dishonesty isn't illegal (well, in some cases) but fraudulent activity definitely is. And taking advantage of people is ethically wrong, although we will see what ends up happening in court. hopefully they will just get scared due to their extreme guilt and attempt to work through mediation instead.

Buying a used car at a dealer vs. private party?

Dealers you get guarantees and trust me you need them don't ever buy a car with one.

Private party its faster at times but there is now way of knowing what they did to so it sounds good at that moment. Then when you go 50 miles or so you find out they did a lot to make sound real good but really it was just a piece of junk.

Good luck My best advise is go to a well know dealer that many people have said did a good job with. Trust you intuitions. Don't let them push a car on you. ever. Good luck again.
