Buying My First Vehicle

Should I buy a motorcycle or a car as my first vehicle?

If you have to ask you probably should get the car for transportation... you only want the motorcycle for the fun.

If you want to find out if you are an idiot full time rider you don't want a hot fun motorcycle -- you want a 50cc scooter. It is far cheaper than a car or a motorcycle. It can take you anywhere you need in the city. You can carry lots of stuff with underseat storage plus a tail box. Ride it for at least 2 years. If you still prefer two wheels than four, you are a rider.

How do I buy my first car?

I think the main thing you have to watch out for when buying your FIRST car is to make sure1. It's reliable2. It's cheap3. It's slow4. It's very strongComing from a guy living in the country with the shittiest drivers, this is why I think those are good standards when you're buying your first car.It has to be reliable because this is your FIRST car. If you don't know anything about cars you won't know how to fix it when you run into problems. Go Japanese like Honda, Toyota, etc. Make sure it's cheap. You want to MAKE SURE it's cheap because it is your first car. You don't want it to be expensive because it's your first car. It's the car you use to practice and become a better driver. If you crash, it will be no problem because it will be easy to repair and you won't worry about it more. Most people would worry about crashing it because it's a brand new shiny toy. But it's something for you to practice driving with so it should be cheap for when you get in an accident or when you need to repair it for messing it up.It has to be slow. I can't stress this enough, IT HAS TO BE SLOW. I live in China, the country with some of the shittiest drivers in the world. I've heard endless stories of people getting into accidents with their 400+ hp BMW's and also killing and injuring others while at it. These are mainly little spoiled 18 year-olds after just picking up their licenses. They don't know how to control the power and they don't understand the danger of 400+ hp. So you need to practice with a slower car. Last idea is that it has to be fairly strong so if or when you get in an accident you will be ALIVE. RIP Lee family I will miss you all

Buying my first car-I need tips/info!?

I'm 24 and my husband and I are ready to buy our first car together-the car we've had during our whole relationship was a car my parents gave to me and was paid for. We sold it when we moved (husband is in the military) and now we're ready to buy one.
We want a new-used car...not a brand new off the lot car, maybe one that's been driven a year or 2.
I know we make a down payment, then make monthly payments until the car is paid off...
What are tips for what to look for when buying a car? How much does our credit matter?
Our credit isn't horrible, but its not great, either. Also, my husband is away for a few months and I don't work...will he need to be there when I go in to purchase the car?

Any and all information and tips you can share about this would be great! I am totally new to all of this. Thank you!

At what age should I buy my child his or her first car?

It is not the age.The question is: what does the Young Adult need with the car?A "child" should never be allowed to drive. Way too dangerous. My father bought me my first car the summer after sophomore year in college. It was a very inexpensive car for the time, and allowed me to be independent and drive to my summer job and then when I returned to college (MIT) I was able to start my avocation as a high school soccer referee, where I would dash out of class and drive to a high school to referee. Therefore, I could pay for all the operational costs of the car.My two sons are now 24 and almost 23 (I will update profile when the younger hits 23 in six weeks). Neither had a car through college. Never needed one. The older has had a job for almost 18 months. We gave him our older car when he started the job since he needed transportation, and I wanted my wife to have a new car. He still uses that car (2002).The younger works in Manhattan and lives in Brooklyn and the Last thing he needs or wants is a car. When he moves back to the Boston area, in 8 months (he is training at the company's headquarters but is being groomed for the Boston office), he may get the 2002 car and the older son will buy a new car.So, my wife and I are merely helping them jump-start their lives, like our parents helped us jump start ours. But they have to have a Need for a car. From what I see, No One in high school has a need to own a car, and no one as a college freshman has a need for a car. After that, the need is evaluated on a cost-effectiveness basis. And that is why they are in college............. They told my wife and I when they needed a car.....

Should I buy a used car as my first car?

It depends on how you plan to use it, where you live, where do you work, how much do you drive, your finances and many more variables.I see many people here almost forcing you to buy a used car because everyone assumes that you will “learn from it”, “maintain it”, “dent it”, “learn to appreciate luxury” etc. and one should buy a new car only when one has had enough experience with a used one. I get where that’s coming from, but it’s not necessary that you have the same needs/experiences as others. One usually tends to be careful and responsible with a brand new car, and careless with a used car, and that’s where you hear these stories about scratches/dents. Its psychological. When I graduated and started a 40-hr a week job, I got a new Toyota Camry. I got my driving license and insurance just two days before I bought the car. Not that I didn’t know how to drive, as I had driven before but on the other side of the road and with a manual transmission. I really needed a car at the time especially for work. Here is what I had in mind:Warranty. My time is precious, I didn’t want to keep checking all issues of my car (brakes/tires etc) and wanted something that wouldn’t cause me inconvenience on the highway, which might happen with used cars.I needed a car for 10 or maybe more years, and getting a new would surely last me that long if well maintained. Something that wouldn’t let me down, so that I could afford something like a used BRZ/FR-S alongside for the weekends.I needed something that would run with as little maintenance as possible, nothing much from regular oil changes, tire rotation etc.4 doors, spacious interior, great leg room, and somewhat decent on mileage (30+mpg at least). Also keep in mind that you can get new cars for 0 percent interest, whereas used cars come with interest if you buy from a dealer, or you need to pay cash. I didn’t have cash at the time, so I simply had no other option.50,000 miles so far on my very first car, and not a single issue, nor a single chip or a dent.Yes you can get by with a used car as well, that will save you a lot of money. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you will “learn” something out of it.

I'm buying my first car. Should I get a coupe or sedan?

Ok, speaking from a Teenagers who got his license almost 2 years ago, I think I have the best opinion. I had SO many things to consider when I got my car. I wanted a coupe but I ended up getting my Volvo S70 sedan which proved to be the best choice I ever made. It's super safe and very luxurious inside. Look at a Volvo S40, a nice car with luxury, safety and space.

Do not get the Cougar, they don't make em anymore, so if you need parts it may be hard to come by. The Honda Accord you can't go wrong, they are safe, reliable and very nice so go with Honda.

As for your coupe, sedan question go with a Sedan! I know coupes look more sporty but yeah your insurance will be high like mine and im sure a coupe will make it higher.

But the Sedan is way better, just don't get a lame boring one like the Fords recommended above, they are for old people..Sorry! But anyway my friend got a 2 seater car and when we go out who is having more fun..the group of 2 people with no space, or the one holding 4 others, enjoying each others company and dancing away the night. Not to mention when those beach days come around I can haul everyones stuff.
