Camels Have Three Eyelids To Protect Their Eyes From

Why do camels have three eyelids?

To protect their eyes, camels have long eye lashes that catch most of the sand. If some sand gets into an eye, a camel has a special third eyelid to get it out. Like a windshield wiper on a car, this extra eyelid moves from side to side and wipes the sand away. The eyelid is very thin, so a camel can see through it. In sandstorms, camels often close their extra eyelids and keep walking. You might say that a camel can find its way through a sandstore with its eyes closed.

Kids facts about camels?

Camels were first domesticated 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Most domestic camels today are dromedaries living in Africa. Domestic Bactrians live in Central Asia. Camels can carry hundreds of pounds of cargo up to 30 miles a day.

Unlike many other animals, camels move both legs on one side of the body at the same time.

Camels have three eyelids to protect themselves from blowing sand.

Camel can go for several days without food or water. They carry a supply of fat in their humps. A camel with a sagging hump is a hungry camel! They lose no water from their bodies. They do not sweat and their urine is solid crystal. People in the desert do not wash-up with water, they use sand to clean their dirty dishes.

An annoyed camel will spit at a person.

Hope it helps you!

In many mammals, it is reduced, although mammals like polar bears, camels, and seals have full nictitating membranes. Cats and dogs have 3rd eyelids that are modified nictitating membranes. Humans only have two eyelids (the upper and lower eyelid) but the Plica Semilunaris is a vestigial remnant of the nictitating membrane (meaning the structure remains partially but doesn’t perform the same function).
