Can digital scales be wrong?

I used to use a scale when my weight was dropping. I got down to a steady 180-185 and stayed there until my room mate moved out and took the scale (wasn't mine anyway). I bought a health-o-meter scale from walmart and it said 198-204. In the time between last reading on the old scale and new readings on the new scale I had now change in diet and no noticeable physical change.
With the old scale, I stayed in that 180-185 range for a long time. The new scale has pretty much the same variance but 15 pounds heavier. I went to walmart and stepped on a dial scale (started at zero) and it said 183. So I bought another digital scale (again from health-o-meter) and brought it home only to have it say 204. So basically, out of 4 scales, 2 said 180-185 and 2 said 198-204.
I have also have a weight machine and set it to 185 and attempted to pull myself up. The weights went up initially about 1 inch but I was pulling myself up and they didnt move at all after that first inch.

Is the scale at army MEPS wrong?

My boyfriend is trying to get into the army. We think our home scale is off a few pounds and you actually weigh more, but regardless it's reading 133. My bf has to be 135 the meps doctor said, the last time he went to meps he weighed 140 at the hotels scale & they weighed him 134.6 at meps the next day. They told him they couldn't send him without being exactly 135. The 1st sergeant told us meps scale is a little lighter and weighs you less- approximately by 5 lbs. is this true? Our home scale last time before he left said 138, now a few weeks later it reads 133. He leaves for meps Monday. The recruiter told him to drink lots of water for water weight. HELP

Could my weighing scale be wrong?

No one can really answer this. I doubt you actually gained that much weight in 2 weeks. I actually find it hard to believe that anyone could gain that much in 2 weeks, although I'm sure it can be done. Considering that home scales are often off, I would assume that's what "went wrong". I don't really like to rely on home scales because they're so iffy. I would suggest getting weighed somewhere where the scales are correct and then go home and weigh yourself. Say your scales at home are under by 6 lbs, I would write "add 6 lbs" on a piece of paper and then tape it to your scales so that you'll know how to get your correct weight from your home scales.

How to scale up weight?

Multiply by 1000, not by 10. When you scale up by a factor of 10, these are the results:
* The LINEAR dimensions (length, width, height) go up by a factor of 10;
* The AREA dimensions (square feet of surface area) go up by a factor of 100;
* The VOLUME dimensions (cubic feet) go up by a factor of 1000.

(To convince yourself of this; consider a cube 6" on a side, then another cube 60" on a side. Use the regular formula (length × width × height) to calculate the volume of each cube, in cubic inches. Is the big cube's volume only 10 times the small cube's volume? No!)

If you are building with the same material as your model, the weight goes up by the same factor as the volume; i.e., 1000.

Another thing you have to consider is that bigger things are inherently structurally weaker that smaller-scaled things that are made of the same material. The reason is that the material's strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area of its components (which in your case increases by a factor of 100 when you scale up); but the load produced by the components is proportional to its weight (which in your case increases by a factor of 1000). In other words, as you increase the size, the structure's weight increases faster than its strength, and at some sufficiently large scale it will collapse under its own weight.

To make sure that doesn't happen, you need to stress your model with extra weight to simulate the stress that the full-scale item will experience. Since your full-scale item will be only 1/10 as strong as your model, you need to increase the stress on the model by 10 and see what happens. In your case, that means putting (at least) 2.5 pounds of weight on top of your model and see if it still holds up. If the model's cantilever bends or breaks under this stress, then so will the scaled-up version.

How can i weigh my dog without a weight scale???

You can ask your vet to weigh him next time you take him in. It should be free. There is one way to do it but it still requires using a scale. If you can find somebody to hold the dog and get on a scale, then have that person get on the scale alone - you can deduct the weight of the person alone and you will get your dog's weight.
