What does it mean if an iPhone has a bad ESN and can I buy it?
My iPhone 5s was stolen and Verizon as usual is not taking any pity from anyone nor would they offer me a replacement at a discount so if I want the replacement I would have to buy it at full price. I looked online on ebay and saw some iPhone 5s that were really cheap selling but when I look it says bad ESN. I read somewhere that you cannot activate this with your provider is that is the case. Is this true and what exactly is bad ESN on an iPhone?

I'd recommend listing it as an auction starting at $399.99 and have a buy it now button for $600. BUT. One thing you MUST do before selling it is call the service provider it belongs to and ask if it has a clean IMEI (AT&T) or ESN (anything other than AT&T). This means that it is not connected to any account, and it is not marked as lost or stolen. AT&T phones usually aren't a problem, but CDMA providers will not let you use a phone with a bad (blacklisted) ESN. If they tell you that the iPhone does not have a clean ESN, you must specifically state that the phone has a bad ESN in your eBay listing. If it's AT&T, you probably don't have to bother, but call them just in case.
