Can I Put My Car Under My Dads Insurance

Can my dad put a car for me under his insurance?

It's really not a matter of it being illegal or not. if you get pulled over, the officer is going to ask for your license and proof of insurance for the car and you'll probably be ok. The real problem is what happens in the event of an accident.

Let's talk about a worst case scenario here. Don't laugh, this is totally feasible. You have an accident in which another driver's car is totalled and a passenger is seriously injured and/or killed. You get sued by two people for damages including repairs to the car, wrongful death and/or medical bills. Normally, if you have insurance, the company defends you in court and pays the damages from your liability policy. However, if you are not on the policy, they are going to deny the claim since your father failed to tell them that you would be driving the car. So in this scenario, you have potentially bankrupted your family because you got sued for millions and don't have insurance to cover it. In my mind, it's not a risk worth taking.

Can i put my car under my dads car insurance?

If you are the main driver of the car, you need to insure it yourself, or you are 'fronting'. Fronting is where an experienced driver insures a car for an inexperienced driver to get cheaper insurance. It is a type of fraud as you are obtaining motor insurance by deception and misleading the insurer.

As a young inexperienced driver, you stand a high risk of having an accident in your first few years of driving. If you do, and you are driving, but the car is insured in your Dad's name, the insurer will challenge your claim on the grounds that you were fronting. Even if you are an occasional user, you will have to prove to the insurer that you are not the main user. If you are travelling to work and have an accident, they will know that you are the main user as the car is in your possession for most of the day. The insurer will look for anything they can to get out of paying out on the claim.

If you get caught fronting, the insurer will void the insurance. You will have to pay the cost of the claim yourself including all vehicle and property damage, all injury claims, legal fees, expenses, court costs etc. They will also put both you and your father on the anti-fraud database that goes out to all insurers, so neither of you will be able to get insurance again. You will get 6-8 points on your licence and a fine of around £200 for driving without insurance. Getting 6 points on your licence in the first 2 years can mean your licence gets revoked, and you have to start from scratch again, assuming you can get insurance to start from scratch. Even if you aren't on the fraud database, most insurers would not take on a 17 year old with 6 points.

The insurer could also take you and your father to court for fraud which can lead to a prison sentence.

My advice would be not to do it. If you want to reduce your costs, take the policy out yourself, but with your Dad as a second named driver.

Can I drive my dad's car if I'm under their insurance?

I am 18. I recently got my license. My mom added me under the car insurance. I want to drive one of my dad's cars to school because it's the only car that stays at home every day. The car has full coverage. They say I can't drive it because if I get into an accident I will get into trouble. Is that true? or are they saying that just so that I wont touch the car. I know how to drive really well and I think they are afraid that I will go and crash, which gets me really mad. All I need the car for is to go to school and 2 hours later come back home unless I go out with my girlfriend. Do you think they say to not drive the bmw on purpose? I want to prove them wrong...

Is it illegal to put my car insurance under my dad's name and be the main driver?

I am assuming that you are the owner of the auto. If you are you should really have a policy in your name. Reason being is that if the policy were in Dads name and you were to get into an accident, the check for your car would be made out to Dad and Dad has no reason to give you that check.

Best thing to do is to get policy in your name and list Dad on the policy as a rated driver. If you live with him that should entitle you to his Home/Car discount, Multicar, and plus by listing him on the policy you have his driving experience, his credit, etc. (Assuming you are with the same company)

Rules do change from company to company but best of luck!

My car is registered under my name can my dad get insurance for my car ?

Kim, the answer to your question has to come your insurance agent, because different companies have different rules. Some companies have very strict rules, who ever the car is titled to has to have the insurance in their name. You can add your father on the title along with you, and that will solve that problem. Then some companies, it doesn't matter who's own the car, as long as they are living under the same roof. To make sure you don't run into any problems, call the agent, and they will be glad to tell you whether the title also should include your Dad. Congratulations on the new car, and please be careful! God blesses us all......

Can my dad pay for the house, car, and car insurances that are all under my mom's name?

Yeah, he can pay the premium. The thing to watch out for, though, is to make sure the named insured (your mom in this case) has an insurable interest in the property. You could take out car insurance on your car and I could pay the premiums for you. That'd be fine. But if you don't actually own the car, that's a potential problem even if you’re the one paying the premiums. The exact rules will vary from place to place, but generally an insurance policy is voidable by the insurer if the insured does not have an insurable interest in the thing insured. This rule is one of the things makes insurance more than just a wager. The insurer’s promise under the policy is to indemnify the insured (make the insured whole again), not to put the insured in a better position. This is why you can't insure other people’s property—you can't have an indemnity unless you have been injured.

Can I drive my dads car if I'm not on the insurance?

<>

As long as you have permission from your dad and the name on the insurance matches the name on the ownership the police will not care.

<>

Well I hope all those asterisks translate to "nothing", because if they do then you are correct. If you get into an accident you and your dad will not be covered by the policy. Then you and your dad will be held financially liable for everyone's injuries/damages.

<>

I'm sure that helps in La La Land. Here in the real world not thinking negatively doesn't mean it won't happen. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Don't try and fool the insurance companies. Whatever you think of they've seen a hundred times and know what to look for. So to answer your question, no you wouldn't be covered.

RE Can i insure my car under my dads name?

so im an 18 year old boy right now i drive my dads old car under his insurance, and the registration is in his name, and thats all fine and everything. however my mom is renewing her drivers license soon (she had an accident that didnt allow her to drive for a few years) so my dad is giving her the mini van back and obviously, taking his car back. luckily, i have been anticipating this happening, as all good things must come to an end, and have saved up for a car of my own. i found one, and i went to get an insurance quote and found it was near $90 a month under my name. I put in the same coverage but with my dads information this time and got a quote of $30 a month for the same car. (because apparently 18 year old boys are dangerous drivers or something?) any way, what i am wondering is can i buy the car, and get it registered in my name, but have the insurance covered under my dads name? or should i just give my dad the money for the car and have him buy it and put it in his name and under his insurance but i just drive it, much like what we do now?

RE :Can I have a car in my name under my parents insurance?
I am in need of a new car, but I would like the car to be in my name since I'm the one paying for it. Right now the car I'm driving is under my mom's name and insurance.

Is it possible to have a car in my name and still have it be on HER insurance (and I cant just pay her) since it's obviously much cheaper (like a 300 dollar/month diference)
Update: I meant to say "so I CAN just pay her". Sorry for the confusion if any =S

Can I have a car in my name under my parents insurance?

The answer to the question is dependent on the State in which you live and your parents Auto Insurance company's guidelines.Purchasing and insuring a vehicle involves three basic steps:Title - Document showing the owner's name of the vehicle.Proof of Insurance - Normally in the name of the owner, but in some situations does not need to be exactly the same.Registration - Shows to whom the cars is registered for the purpose of obtaining license plates. There can be numerous scenarios with regard to what is acceptable - or - not acceptable with the: Insurance Company - Companies have underwriting guidelines that are tied to how an insurance policy is written, insurable interest in the vehicle and what they consider generally acceptable. In this scenario, it is your parents policy that is in question and at risk. Their best interest and standing with the insurance company should be a major consideration.DMV - The State Department of Motor Vehicles will have specific rules governed by statutes regarding how a vehicle can be Titled, Insured and Registered. It would be best for you and your parents, to contact your local auto insurance agent and/or your state's DMV[1][2]to determine the best configuration of the three documents above, prior to purchasing a vehicle.Best Regards.Footnotes[1] State DMV List, vehicle registration list, driver license list, dmv locations, forms, and publications[2] DMV.org: The DMV Made Simple
