If I'm on section 8 with my mother could I get a transfer for an apartment for my own self?
If you are an approved occupant on your mother’s section 8 housing voucher and you want to be transferred off her voucher to get your own this action could effect your mother’s voucher size. If your mother was the head of household approved for say a 3 bedroom voucher with you counting as an occupant and you leave, most likely she will be downgraded to a 2 bredroom voucher with a lower rental payment standard. She most likely would have to vacate the 3 bedroom and find a suitable 2 bedroom unit. (Unless the landlord at the 3 bedroom is willing to accept the lower 2 bedroom rental payment)But if you do pursue this course of action, you will have to apply like everyone else and qualify based on your own income, family size and composition. Some PHA’s might give you preferrential treatment based on your circumstances or prior enrollment in program but in most cases you will be added to the list and have to wait for your number to be called.

Can you tell them you wanna move before you have rented a place in the program in your current town? And does this apply everywhere; I.E. will all housing authorities allow you to do this? For instance, I am in Crescent City ca and am transfering to the university and getting my section 8 voucher soon, but the university is in another county. Can I just tell them I want to move to a specific area right away, and will they allow this? Or must I live in my area with the voucher first? I've lived here for like 5 years. I've heard confilicting stories out of different areas. Please help! they won't tell me when I call.

Transferring a section 8 voucher for rent assistance is not transferable. Each person would be required to apply for section 8 and be approved on each person's merit. You would be required to apply for section 8 benefits and be approved based on your income and number of dependents. Your grandmother would be required to inform the section 8 of the fact that she would be moving from her current rental unit. If she plan to use section 8 benefits sat her new place would be required to re-apply for her section 8 benefits in the new city in which she move. If your grandmother move and you continue to remain in the rental unit paying the same rent as if you were on the section 8 voucher benefit program would be considered fraud. If found out you and/or your grandmother could be charged with fraud. Being ignorant or not knowing is not a defense against fraud. The law would indicate, if you did not know, you should have asked your grandmothers case worker You would be required to pay back the money and in some instances you and or your grandmother could possibly face jail time for the crime of fraud. You call and report the change. The medicaid card is the one that would effect you the most. Most doctors wont accept medicaids from a different county. We have this thing called a county code. Doctors will only accept certain county codes. dont be ashamed. But try to get this done right away.

You can’t transfer a section 8 voucher to someone else. If she is currently living with you and part of your approved household for section 8, there is a possibility you might be able to drop off it yourself so she is the only person left on it. However, this is not possible in all cases.

You can if either the county in Delaware is absorbing vouchers from another county/state or your current Housing Authority can approve "porting out" to a new county/state, that means your current county gets billed for your rent in the new county/state. You have to arrange this through your Housing worker.
