Like the first poster said, the vet would have prescribed the correct dosage for your dog. This product should NOT be administered on herding breed dogs, as they are more prone to adverse reactions.

Noromectin is dosed for large animals, not for dogs. If you are looking for a product to give on your own without a vet Rx, you'll have to find something different. There are cheaper alternatives to Heartgard that are meant for dogs.

What is Ivomec...........?

It is Ivermectin, the same medicine used in Heartguard to prevent heartworm and other worm infestations in dogs. But the Ivomec brand is a cattle dewormer. It's an injectible, but it can also be used orally for dogs and is much more economical for anyone with multiple dogs. One bottle costs about $30 and lasts up to 3 yrs. It is available in feed/livestock stores and online without prescription.
I won't give out dosage instructions online. You should research this product and talk to your vet. Not all vets will recommend the use of this, so you might want to look for a vet who deals with people in more rural areas .....this is how I found out about it.
I've used it for over 10 years and never had a problem.

Can I use Ivomec for my dogs allergies??

It is not for your dogs allergies,, But to make sure your dog is not itching because of a parasite infection..
Sarcoptic mange can be bloody difficult to diagnose..Causes intense itching that can be confused with a allergy.. but most vets will treat a dog with symptoms to make sure that this parasite is not there,,it is inexpensive, easy and safe in non collie breeds,, and often results in a "cure" of suspected allergy cases because there was sarcoptic mange..
Hence, treatment every 10 days, or one dose,, to see the response..
Also Ivomec is used to treat some form of demodex mange... common in pit bulls,, Does your dog have that in addition to allergies? This is generally diagnosed easily with a skin scraping.. unlike sarcoptic mange..
your dog may have allergies, but treatment for the itching, secondary infection with meds and covering for both sarcoptic or demodex a parasite,, is a good protocol for most pets.. If the dog does not respond (very dramitcally BTW) then allergies are the primary cause.. and may need further diagnostics and or treatment to make the dog comfortable..

BTW, Best to get to the vet and get the medication directly from them or CONFIRM the medicine you have purchased is ok to use..
To ensure the propper dosage, there are several forms of ivomec,, and the wrong one at that amount can kill your pet.. Ivomec is a antiparasite medicine used in the heartworm medications, and in Large animals(cows, pigs) but treats worm, along with external parasites.. So there are several ways and strenghts it comes in..
Revolution topical monthly heatworm medicine is also a VERY safe and effective option..you vet can get this for you,, or at least a prescription.. and it will cover for sarcoptic, along with fleas, ticks and heartworm in a once a month topical dose..

Ivomec for dogs?

Ivomec can be used to prevent heartworms in most dogs but is dangerous to some breeds, specifically herding breeds such as collies and german shepherds.

You are correct it will not kill tapeworms

Panacur (Fenbendazole also labeled as safe-guard for goats, farm supply store) will kill round worms, hooks and whips, the taenia varieties of tapeworms in both dogs and cats, does not kill the type carried by fleas and does not prevent heartworms. It is also used for giardia.

The dosage to kill adult heartworms is very dangerous to use not under supervision of a vet, as the worms die they can be thrown as a clot blocking blood flow and leading to death, it happens even in vets offices under direct supervision, that should give you an idea of how dangerous it can be. At a vet they do have any needed equipment for surgery and oxygen and still loose some dogs. I personally would never treat a heartworm + dog at home the risk is just too high.

ALL OF THESE HAVE SIDE EFFECT and all present a certian amount of danger, read all cautions and know side effect symptoms and make sure you follow age restrictions.

Most vets will tell you the amount of ivomec for your dog, some will even sell it to you. I have never used it as an injectable only given the injectable form orally. It works just as well orally.

With cats a lower dose is often given of ivomec for ear mites.

Dosage to prevent heartworms can be found on the net but I would prefer you consult a vet I do not like giving out dosages. Dogs infected with heartworms should not be treated at home and should not be given the preventative dosage as it may result in throwing a clot and death. This is the reason it is a Rx treetment for heartworms, you should have a negative test first, then start preventative. The preventative dose kills microfillia before they have a chance to become adult worms.

Can ivermectin sheep drench dewormer be used on dogs?

It can be used as long as you understand the math as to how to dose the medication. It has to be used very carefully in those breeds and mixes that potentially have the mutant MDR1 gene. We've seen sevral dogs of all breeds and mixes over the years with ivermectin toxicity because the owner just "eyeballed" the dose or gave the large animal dose instead of dosing the product for dogs.

Can I use Ivermectin(1%) to treat worms in my dogs and at what ratio?

If you are using the 1% ivermectin straight out of the bottle and giving your dog 1/10th of a cc (0.1 cc = 0.1 ml) per pound of body weight, you are dosing your dog at the rate of 1 mg per pound of body weight. That is FAR FAR over the recommended dose of no more than 0.003 mg per pound of body weight. Even if you're doing it at 1/10 cc per TEN lbs it's still way too much. Doing it THIS way – straight, uncut – with the 1% ivermectin would be far riskier than anything I personally would want to be involved with.


There are several breeds that are sensitive to ivermectin. In the case of mixed breeds dogs, the rule is white feet, don't treat.

You don't say what type of worms you are trying to treat, but there are many options that are safer than ivermectin.

Can ivomec get rid of heartworms in a dog?

It's my understanding that adult heartworms live approximately a year.
Routinely giving a heartworm preventative for that year to prevent further infestation should allow the ones now present in the dog to die off. This wouldn't work too well if the dog is heavily infested as the dead heartworms can cause problems in the workings of the heart.
Just waiting for them to die off would worry me too but theoretically it should work. I would ask the Vet. to give you the dosage for a seven pound dog. I know the dosage as it's what I use for my own dogs but like a lot of people I don't want to take the responsibility should anything happen to him.

Can I use equine 1.87% Ivermectin paste topically on my dogs mange?

I bought it before I read all the info stating how hard it would be to dose for a dog and the possibility that it could make them very sick. So, I'm wondering if I cant give it to her orally, if I can put it on the areas and it would work that way?? She's a 50 lb. boxer rescue dog that had a little bit of mange left when we got her (she had been treated for it but there was a little spot left that actually came back and then grew). The spot is on her back where she cant reach to scratch. I read that if the lick it off, they could still get sick. So, if she cant reach it to lick it off, is it safe topically??
