Can My Apartment Charge My Security Deposit If

Apartment: What's an initial deposit?

Yes if the apartment is in good shape (besides normal wear and tear) and your landlord isn't a scumbag you should deff get your security deposit back when you move out...also when looking for the right place here's a few tips:

*don't rent over your budget you will end up just working to pay the rent and you never know when you will have unforeseen costs

*make sure there are no bugs/rodents anywhere (check kitchen cupboards)

*make sure there are enough outlets where you need them (I lived in an apt in college that didn't have an outlet in the bathroom!!!!!)

*save your rent reciepts and apply for renters insurance..it could really save you in the long run!

Hope you find a great place!!

Do I have to pay another security deposit if I renew my apartment lease?

No. The purpose of the security deposit is to have money to pay for damages or unpaid rent if you skip out on them. They hold this, and if you leave the apartment in good shape and with proper notice, you should get the security deposit back.
Since they are already holding your security deposit, there should be no reason to pay another one.

Around how much would our security deposit be?

So my boyfriend and I are planning to move into our first apartment together at the end of this month/middle of next, and we ve worked everything out as far as price and budget wise. The only thing we re unsure about, is how much the security deposit will be. The apartments is $540 a month for rent, and we have to pay for electricity, which she said would be a rough estimate of $50. So overall, about $600 a month. Which he have plenty saved up for, but what would be the best estimate on the price of the initial security deposit? Thank you so much

Landlord charging for security & pet deposit?

We're looking to rent a house, where in the first month, the landlord wants the rent, $700, a security deposit, $700, and a pet deposit of $700 for our 2 cats (declawed/spayed/litter trained). So on moving day, we have to pay $2100.

I live in Ohio...is this legal? Are there any limits to what a landlord can charge? I always assumed that a small deposit would be acceptable, 50-$100, but a whole months rent? It just seems insane. The landlord clarified to me that both the deposits are refundable upon inspection, but I just can't see charging this much up front!

When you renew your lease do you get security deposit back?

By definition, a lease “renewal” extends the terms of a lease to cover a new period of time. So if the existing lease requires a security deposit, that requirement applies to the renewal period.Security deposits are returned (or retained) when the leased premises is vacated, not when the lease is renewed. In some cases, the renewal offer is contingent upon a change in the original terms, such as a higher rent. Just as with the original lease, these terms are always negotiable.A tenant can certainly request return of the security for the renewal term, but very few landlords would agree to continue a tenancy without a security deposit. If a tenant originally paid excess security, perhaps because of poor credit or other risk factors, it would then be reasonable for the tenant to request a partial return of the security upon renewal, so that the landlord is holding only one month’s rent for the renewal term.

Can my NYC landlord withhold part of my security deposit for "touch up paint"?

Nope. By definition, "touch up paint" is a light application of paint to cover minor defects, such as light scratches or marks on a wall surface. Light marks, scuffs and scratches are an expected and ordinary result of normal use and are therefore exempt from charge against a tenant's security deposit. But good luck getting it back!
