No, it is not illegal if you are under the age of 18. In fact, it is a great idea. It would be nice if they could let you know that they are reading them, but regardless they are your parents. They are the reason that you have a phone, right?What is it that you don’t want them to read? Perhaps you shouldn’t be texting it, if you can’t show it to them. In my mind, if there is something that I would not want my mom to see me doing, then I probably shouldn’t be doing it.

unless they're the type of parents that need to know EVERYTHING said and will use any means necessary to find out, no they won't know. Tracfone doesn't send out bills or records to their customers because it's a pay-as-you-go system and customers maintain it by simply purchasing a card. I'd imagine, however, that Tracfone is like every other phone company and has a record of text messages for legal reasons. If your parents REALLY wanted to know what was being said I'm sure there's a way the could find out.
How did my parents read my texts?
There are apps and security programs that your parents can buy to install on your device that lets them monitor certain chosen programs like, messaging, phone calls(they cant listen to the calls ,but they can see the number/contact & how long the conversation was etc.), data usage, wifi connections, browsing history, and stuff like that.

They won't be able to see who you text but they will be able to see who you call. They only way to talk with someone without your parents knowing their number, is for the other person to call you

No. Parents should not go through private settings in a child's phone. Here is the kicker. Most parents think it is their right to surf their child's phone because they pay the bill and it is their home. Have I gone through any of my 4 children's phones? Yes. I'm not happy about this although I think what I found might defuse this argument in some families tonight. I have never read or discovered anything in any of their phones that I didn't already know or that surprised me. My shameless behavior was unnecessary and I knew this each time I did it. What I did was violate my kids privacy and worse breaking the trust we had built in each other. I was never caught but I knew what I had done.If you are a parent thinking of doing what I did, hear me first. Be prepared to find nothing. Unless you are going through the heartbreak of teenage drug use, bullying, pregnancy, drinking etc., you are not going to find anything in that phone that is worth the guilt you will feel. If your child was in trouble you would be doing more than reading text messages, tweets and Facebook posts. Their phone would be the last thing on your mind. Leave the phone alone and sit your child down and start talking! They will let you know just enough to ease your worried mind and your silly curiosity. Let your great kid have the earned privilege of privacy.

Okay so awhile back my dad told me he could read every text message I send or receive. He kinda sounded like he was just messing with me but multiple times he has asked my sister, "were you texting [someones name] today?" as if she said something bad to that person. I don't know if it is because he looked on her phone or he could somehow view the messages some other way. I've had my phone for like half a year and my parents have never confronted me about any texts.. but I still worry that my dad can view my texts because I would probably get in trouble. I have a t-mobile phone with unlimited text messages and my phone is under a family plan. Can he read them online?? Please help!

i have a Cricket phone. and my mom is very much the spy. I just wanted to know can she read my text messages online? she's not on my dad's phone plan or anything and i heard that parents can read your text messages if they have a password or something. is that true? b/c she wouldn't hesitate to ask my father for it.
