Can Someone Tell Me What These Wire Connectors Are Called

Why is the serial port called a male connector and a parallel port a female connector?

Serial cables (RS-232) can have both male and female connectors, as can parallel port cables. The reason the serial connector is called male and the parallel is called female (as stated by the OP) is that is the standard way these particular connectors on the back of older PC’s were provisioned:Note the Serial RS-232 (DE-9) male connector (outlined in red) and the Parallel Port (DB-25) female connector (outlined in blue). The other HD-15 female connector on the lower right is for a VGA monitor. I won’t go into the definition of male and female connectors, the other answers each do that.Newer PC’s no longer have either of these connectors; they have been replaced by USB and if someone needs one of the classic interfaces, you can buy USB to RS-232 and USB to parallel adapters.

How do you explain to a child why some cable connectors are called "female" and the other connectors that fit into them are called "male"?

How do you explain to a child why some cable connectors are called "female" and the other connectors that fit into them are called "male"?I think that depends on the age of the child, and whether they know anything yet about human biology and sexual reproduction. We tried to use correct biological terms for body parts with our children, even when they were very young, and when they asked about where babies came from, or how a baby (fetus) got inside of a woman, we explained as much as they seemed to need to know at the time. We never lied, and if they asked for more details, we gave them.So if the child understands that humans make babies by having the male place a body part that sticks out (his penis) into a part of the female’s body that opens inward (the vagina), then it makes sense for the part of the connector that sticks outward to be called “male”, and the part that is a receptacle (concave) is “female”.If the child is too young for the full explanation, I think it is still fine to point out that most males have a penis that sticks out, while most females have a vagina that opens inward, in the corresponding part of their body, and leave it at that.

What are those crimp connectors called that fold over the two wires?

I am assuming that you are talking about a crimp ring. Not very common.

If you are planning to solder a connection, the wires generally are not crimped first.
For smaller wires, there are some specific twisting techniques to give the finished connection better strength. For larger wires just flaring the wires so that they mix a bit and then twisting them gives enough surface area for the solder to have strength.

Consider a dual layer shrink tube. The inner layer is a hot melt glue that really locks the shrink tube to the wires and makes it water proof.

Actually, crimp butt splice connectors are better than most solder jobs, and with a decent crimper they are much faster to do. You can also get them with the dual layer shrink insulation.

The fold over "insulation displacement" splices that use metal forks to cut through the insulation are good enough for most non stressed uses but not as good as the crimp splices or soldering. They are also not as "clean" looking for the final job.

What is the name of the RJ45 connector that has split lanes for the wires to go in?

Sorry the question is so poorly worded. Last year I was creating a CAT6 wire and the connectors were very interesting. Instead of all the pairs going in at the same height, like this: -|-|-|-|-|-|-|-, there were alternating lane heights to reduce cross-talk. It kinda looked like this: -|_|-|_|-|_|-|_|-. Every other pin either went higher than the normal line in the connector or went below that normal line. I was told there was a name for them, and they were real RJ45 connectors that worked in any standard port.

Can anyone think of the name?

Hardwire led lights in a computer?

You could find a molex connector, or cut the one off your power supply (sometimes called 4pin) and find out what pins = 12v (theres 12v and 5v) then you wire the lights to those.

Red and white audio wire replacement for bose speakers(to connect to laptop)?

i was given a "Bose Companion® 2 multimedia speaker system " by a friend and it came with everything and such.

i lost the wire that was used to connect the speaker to my laptop.

im not much of a tech guy, and dont know much about wires and such so im asking this here.

can someone point me into the direction for replacement wires.

the wires im looking for connect to the back of one of the speakers, the ports are red(r) and white(l) audio input wires, and the other end is used to connect into my laptop(where headphones and such go)

so yh, could someone point me in the direction of where i could buy a new wire or tell or type of wire that it is so i can look for one in a shop. thanks.

Can someone give me a quick rundown on how electrical currents work?

An electrical current is a bit like water flowing through a hose. It doesn’t flow unless there is some pressure in that hose. In the same way, electrical current doesn’t flow if there is no voltage. Voltage exists, for example, between the two terminals of a battery and not between two ends of a wire that is not connected to anything. On the other hand, even if there is pressure in a hose, water won’t flow if there is a blockage (infinite resistance). Likewise, electrical current won’t flow if there is infinite resistance (like air between the two battery terminals).Electrical current itself is a bit like water current where the molecules of water move through a hose, except that, instead of molecules, it’s the electrons that jump from atom to atom (in conducting solids, like your copper wires). Some solids allow these electrons to pass more easily (less resistance) and some don’t allow them to pass at all (they are called insulators and have infinite resistance).

What are the red and yellow cables you plug into the TV and the Wii called?

I see some incorrect answers to this one.The entire cable is called an A/V cable (the A/V stands for audio video). Here are the individual parts:RCA plug: the connectors at the TV end. Yellow for video, Red for right audio, Black or white for left audio.Wire: Each plug is attached to a dual core wire, three in total. Each plug requires a positive and a negative charge.Proprietory connector: This is the plug at the Wii end. It is unique to the Wii and cannot be connected to other consoles.Done people have answered “component cable”. This is a slightly different cable, as it has 3 connectors for video signal alone, plus another two for left and right audio (so 5 in total). The cable you describe has only 3.
