How do I remove a water stain from a tatami mat?

This is from:

http://www.chopa.com/ShopSite/tatami-mat-information.html

Use a slightly damp cloth for general cleaning. Do not use strong detergents or abrasive cleaners as these may damage the surface of the mats. For stubborn marks, use an equal portion of white vinegar and water using a damp cloth.

However if you got a lot of water on the surface you may have moved the minerals in the straw itself.
In which case you probably have a slightly lighter area where the minerals were and the dark area were they are now. This spot has now become the perfect spot for a pillow to sit on.

How do I get dog poop out of a tatami mat?

My brand new puppy managed to escape from his crate while I was out and had several accidents on my Japanese tatami. I found many suggestions on how to get dog poop out of carpets, but the tatami seems stained and I don't know what to use. Please, people experienced with tatami and dogs or other kinds of stains please offer your advice. I do not want to damage the tatami either as it is very expensive to replace. Thank you!

What do tatami floor mats feel like?

To supplement the two answers above, when tatamai is new, it smells something like a dried hey and is a bit green in colour, as one of our old sayings says that "wife and tatami is best when they are new" (Don't be offended), we appreciate the smell of new tatami but it fades away gradually and the color turns to light brown.
The feel of touch of tatami is something like the one in between that of a wooden floor and a thick rug.

How do I put my table and chair on tatami mats floor in a Japanese style room?

I feel you, OP.When I first moved to Japan, my rental apartment was also tatami floor (and shared bathroom). Every time when I tried to sit like a Japanese (seiza) on the tatami or cushion (zabuton) for more than 2minutes, I felt like millions of ants marching on my legs. And from the fifth minute, I no longer felt my legs. I would need someone to “rescue” me to stand up when leaving, and I could not help groaning because of my numb legs and feet. Oh I hate to be such a silly “gaijin” (foreigner)!Later my Japanese friend helped me find something like this from a furniture store.Ummmmm… It felt good! At least I could stretch my legs all the way I like. Also this.More relaxing.Carpet+ low table (kotatu style) + legless chair/sofa= comfy!I eventually built my comfy nest in Japan. One hot summer day, I was invited to my neighbor’s room (next door) to enjoy her handmade tea pudding. The moment I stepped into her room, I felt obviously her room was cooler than mine. The AC was off. The room was exactly same to mine (in same building, same direction). Why?I stretched my fare feet (I got to know it’s totally not necessary to keep that tough kneeling “seiza” position if you don’t feel comfortable. Japanese people would never blame foreigners sitting “messy”.) on her tatami mat which gave my skin a totally different and cool touch. I smelled this straw scent of tatami. I heard this wind bell whispered “Dingling-Dingling”.All cooled me down. All were cool.I experienced another kind of comfy.Unique and cool.Later I started to try Japanese tatami style hot spring spa hotels (onsen yado). After enjoy the fantastic bathtub, I put on the summer bathrobe (yukata). I lie down on the tatami, every inch of my skin immerses in the tatami scent and touch. I gaze into the distance. My bare toes play with each other. I drink cool cocoa milk. I hear the birds, the spring, and my own heart. You know what is heaven? This is.I left Japan for a long time.I miss the tatami scent and touch badly.I dream to exchange my current full furniture room for a room like this:I love to build a comfy nest.I love to sometimes leave this nest for a dream land too.We can enjoy both, can’t we? ^^And thanks for the A2A, Ankit.(Images from the internet)

Cheap alternative for a tatami mat floor?

Hi, i do ninjutsu and at the dojo we use tatami padded floor to avoid getting hurt when doing throws and tumbles.
Me and my friend will be moving in another city soon, just for a year, so we wont be attending training,
but we thought we'd make a room to practice so that we stay in shape.

Tatami mats go for 20-30 euros per square meter, and we currently cannot affort to spend around 600-1000 euros,
so we're trying to figure out a way to simulate this kind of floor.

We were thinking about getting a few layers of cardboards stuck together, with a breakdancing mat securely placed over it.
Do you think this will work, or have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time :)

Do you sleep directly on a Tatami mat?

I have been looking for a harder surface to sleep on that isn't a hard wood floor or carpet and takes up very little room.

However I've been a bit confused as to weather a Tatami mat is a platform on which you put a matress or if you sleep directly on the mat.

Can anyone help me out here?
