Can the dentist tell you dip and can he tell your parents?
So here's the situation I live in nj I'm 15 a minor and I dip(if you don't know what dip is don't answer). I started in early October 2010 and I use about a tin every week week an a half. From what ive read he probably can tell but my main concer is if he can tell my parents. I've had receding gums to to poor brushing since my last visit about five months ago but ive actually been brushing better but due to the dip my gums arnt healing. Don't tell me it's bad it is or I should quit because I'm trying I tried in the past and failed but I'm trying again.

Did you lie on the medical information sheet that the dentist should have had you fill out? It is part of your medical record and your parents have access to it.

I had 2 sisters who smoked. one died of stomach cancer and one died from small cell lung cancer so I say quit but you have been warned of what the future has in store.

I am 16 and have dipped off and on for about 3 and a half months now. I have a dentist appointment in 3 days. I have heard that they can tell if you dip and if you are underage they might tell your parents. My gum lines haven't receded but it looks like there are some small white bumps on my gums by my front bottom 6 teeth. Is there any way to make it disappear or make it to where they won't notice. I have decided to quit. Now I'm just scared that they might tell my parents. Also could I say that I chew sunflower seeds a lot and drink sodas a lot if they ask??? PLEASE HELP!!!

Andrew, let me summarize your reasoning - my Mom let me do it even though she like it ( called enabling) Dad dipped around my age , and he dips all the time. ( rationalizing or making excuses). How do you tell them- when you get arrested for buying it underaged, when your doctor /dentist tells them you have mouth cancer, they find spit deposits or the tin, notice the tobacco stains on your teeth, smell it on you.... Andrew it is an expensive habit, and has negative health effects. You didn't say why you do it except it is something your Dad does. It will raise your insurance rates as the anti-tobacco Nazis try to eliminate tobacco in America. I have more life experiences and I have heard life- time tobacco users talk about the use of tobacco by their children and grandchildren. They don't wish the curse ( nicotine addiction) on them. This being said as they lite up another cigarette they chain smoked and talked about a young man who just graduated from high school. The Dad about 15 years later - a 2 pack a day Marlboro man- died from recurrent bladder cancer he got due to smoking. The chemo caused him to have a stroke, and he had to catheterize himself to remove his urine. The grandfather had quit smoking for about three years after smoking about 60 years with the help of a doctor who motivated him, and started up again when he stopped going to her due to going over to the VA. The grandmother made him smoke in his truck since her house no longer smelled of smoke.

He/She may mention that you have "not so clean" teeth or things of that nature but the confidentiality law still goes into effect. No one can legally obtain any information about you unless you give them permission. Your parents may confront you later though once they notice symptoms of tobacco such as bad breathe, stains, ect. Now, since you are a minor, the dentist is in charge of your health. He/She will most likely mention the presence of tobacco on your teeth, tongue, and mouth.

I wondered this a lot myself, but not only did the dentist never comment on my use of chewing tobacco, but he also never made a comment to my parents. I'm almost positive that as mentioned, doctor patient confidentiality comes into play so that they can't.

I can't say how many uses it would take, but a dentist is trained to look for the nicotine stains or white lesions that tobacco causes in your mouth. And in case Weeee! didn't know, it's often the dentist that first discovers cancers in the mouth, so don't be flippant.
