Can You Cancel A Contract Early And Sell The Phone

How do phone contracts work?

A two year contract means you agree to pay for monthly service for a minimum of two years. Keep in mind that this is for "service", not a phone. Losing or destroying your phone means nothing in terms of the contract; you have to keep paying monthly. An advantage of agreeing to a contract is that you can get a new phone subsidized (get it for a reduced price). If you want a new phone WITHOUT agreeing to a contract, you pay full retail (and the iPhone 6 Plus can go up to $1229.00! Ouch.).

If you want to end the contract early, you have to pay out the remainder as well as any early-cancellation fees. This can be very expensive.

An unlocked phone means that it has been modified (software) to accept a SIM card from any carrier that the phone is compatible with. Typically, a phone you buy from a carrier is locked to their service. Example: Buy a phone from a T-Mobile store, and you can only use it on T-Mobile. If you try to use it on Verizon, it won't work - you'd have to unlock it first.

Unlocking is great if you travel, or if you are going to sell the phone. A downside is that there's no protection if it's stolen or lost - the person finding it can use it right away with their own SIM card.

Is it legal to SIM unlock a cell phone under contract?

While unlocking is not illegal per se, many cell phone companies lock devices they sell under contract or on an installment payment plan. And this is done because they want to make sure the money is made on subsidized devices. It is true however that in such cases, the customer ends up paying extra for their phone. And of course, mobile providers want to make it hard for you to unlock such a device. But truth of the matter is that even if you get it unlocked through your provider or by using some other method (e.g. unlocking service, etc.), you are still liable for all the payments on your installment plan and on whatever contract agreement you signed. If you do not honor these, it will be reflected negatively on your credit report. It is just like an unpaid debt.Where it becomes controversial is when a good customer needs their phone unlocked for clearly legit reasons (travel, etc.) and the company holds their device hostage refusing to unlock it. There has been a lot of back and forth between customers and cell phone providers in U.S. trying to resolve this exact deadlock situation. There is no legal means to pursue this matter in courts for either side because companies are not technically obliged to unlock such devices and the only recourse that the customer has is to file a complaint with FCC which will lead nowhere since FCC cannot legally force companies to unlock in-contract devices. In short, there is no law that mandates unlocking. At the same time, there is a law - Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that prohibits “unauthorized removal or modification of cell phone access controls” and a carrier “lock” technically falls under these “access controls”, according to the FCC page on device unlocking. But then in August of 2014 under then President Obama’s Administration, there was another law passed: the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act that again allowed cell phone unlocking by consumers nullifying the effect of the DMCA act.

How to cancel 1 year Tivo contract ?

You can sell the box AND contract with the box, (lifetime is transferrable). Any family or friends you trust might be trusted to use the remaining service and not subect you to canellation fees?

However, If you have ANY signal (out in the sticks), the box will work off an antenna also (if not as well), but no cable means no HD ability after the big change
( }:- | please tell me you have seen the crawl or commercials which interrupt nearly every program shown otherwise let us ALL know how you avoided it! :-D )
Good luck!

What happens if you get a phone on contract and you lose it?

Depends on the contract.  If your contract specifies you have to return the phone at the end of your contact, well you'll be forced to pay out-right for the phone, typically a pro-rated rate rather than full cost. If your contract says once the term is over the phone is yours, well you'll have to continue paying the agreed upon monthly fees until the contract comes to an end.  An alternative would be to pay the Early Termination Fees, which would then end the contract.  If your contract is over and you're now only paying monthly usage fees, well then end the month-to-month "contract" and go from there. If you want to keep the contract, AND the contract doesn't specify you have to return the phone at the end of the contract, you have a few options. Some carries have a refurbished section.  Look to purchase a new phone there and then have them replace your lost phone with your new phone. You can buy a replacement phone (new or used) and call your carrier and have them replace your existing (lost) phone with your new phone. Take note, you're buying out-right, ie without a contract, so you'll get no discounts and no pro-rated deals.  So you may be best to look for something used or on sale.

Can you go to jail if you break att cellphone contract without paying them monthly.?

No it will just hurt your credit rating if you don't pay them. Also probably can never get a phone from them again and when you have bad credit and other companies see that it will be hard for you to get anything done.

How do i cancel my metro pcs service to sell the phone?

I was under the assumption that by not paying your bill for 2 consecutive payment due dates, your service would be suspended and in order to use that phone again with metro you have to change your number and pay a reactivation fee. Well, i haven't had metro's service for over 6 months, but they just keep saying i owe more and more money! i can't even use the phone because there is no service! All i want to do is cancel everything and sell the phone- that has been my plan since the last time i paid the bill.

THERE IS NO CONTRACT WITH METRO PCS. THEY TELL YOU IN STORE THAT IF YOU WANT TO STOP USING THEM, YOU JUST DON'T PAY FOR THE FOLLOWING MONTH. it is similar to a pay as you go thing....you pay month by month, and if you don't pay you don't have service the next month.......

Can I terminate my contract on Sprint then start a new contract?

How much does it cost to cancel a Verizon Wireless mobile phone subscription?

There is no disconnect fee, and with that end of 2 year contracts, there are no more Early Termination Fees (ETF). If you decide to leave, all you owe is the balance on any device financing agreement you haven’t paid off yet, and your final bill for service prorated to the date of disconnection. If you are somehow under a 2 year contract for a phone (these should be all complete) or other device, the fees are:* $350 for smartphones * $175 for basic phones and connected devices (Jetpacks, tablets, cameras, smartwatches, etc.)If you are receiving a monthly credit on your device financing agreement to reduce the price or get a “free” phone, these credits will be void when you cancel, and you will still owe the ENTIRE balance.
