Can You Get A Job As A Corrections Officer If You Have Been In Jail Before

Can corrections officers become detectives?

Yes a huge difference.
Some sheriffs departments have all patrol officers go through jail corrections for a year or two before they are allowed on the street. Once on the street for a couple of years they can apply for detectives when a test comes up.
The certification for corrections and police is different. All states require much less instruction for corrections than for peace officer. The jobs are both part of law enforcement but are different.
(just like prosecutors, who have to be lawyers are part of LE but re not the same as cops).

Only one municipal police department runs their own jail and those people do not transfer between corrections and police without going through the whole process like any other recruit.

Saying all that most corrections, both jail and prison, have their own internal investigators who come from the ranks and get specialized training in investigations. They only handle minor internal stuff.
For example any death in my local county jail is investigated by the us city homicide detectives with the assistance of the jail investigators.

Correctional Officer Training?

i work for the Arkansas Department Of Corrections and i had to go to the Prison i work for now and fill out an application and upon hiring you they screen you drug test you check your driving record and everything had your file over to FBI to see if you have any convictions in another state or country. then you go to the training academy which was several miles away for me to have to go to the hours for my class was 7:30 a.m. til 4:00 p.m. monday thru friday. and it was a 7 week course but you got paid every 2 weeks during training i was making $10.99 an hour. so it varies in pay for different officers and different locations vary in how much training you need too.

Is it normal for a corrections officer to date a former inmate of his county jail?

As someone with experience in corrections (local jails) and public employee unions (shop steward), the answer is almost always No.  And when it's No, it's not just No, but Hell No.  However, there are exceptions, and they depend largely on the time frame. If the relationship began while the inmate was in custody, it would be a serious crime on the part of the officer and a heinous breach of professionalism.  Unfortunately, it's not unheard of.  Some officers lack sense, want to abuse their power, and/or succumb to manipulation.  Other officers, in rare instances, may be sexual predators.  In any case, this is the worst type of sexual/relationship misconduct. If they started a relationship shortly after the inmate's release, the relationship might not be illegal (if it truly began after the release and not before), but would be (in my opinion) unethical and unprofessional.  It would be impossible for supervisors, coworkers, other inmates, and the public to look at this situation and not suspect the officer began the relationship while the person was incarcerated.  I have a hard time imagining this officer not being fired, or having any sympathy for them if they were. On the other hand, in a very small county, it is not inconceivable that an person who was once incarcerated could, after some time, date without it being a legal or ethical issue.  People make connections, and it'd be unreasonable to say an officer can't date someone just because that person was once incarcerated; the important thing is that the connection did not occur because of their meeting in jail. It would also be acceptable if a couple was already dating, and then the non-officer was arrested and incarcerated.  In that case, it becomes an administrative issue, one that can be addressed by reassigning the officer and/or transferring the inmate elsewhere.  If the significant other becomes a "frequent flier," however, other steps may need to be taken.

Can you be pregnant and work as a Correctional Officer?

Jessica, It's not a crime to become pregnant while you're looking for a job. Basically, if you are getting a job with the DOC and the academy hasn't even started yet, and if the time comes that you know that you are actually pregnant, you are going to have to tell somebody involved with your hiring process at the DOC. Obviously, you can't keep that a secret and you don't want to. Your getting pregnant now is not a problem but, if you don't tell anybody about it there, at some point... It will be! If you don't tell anybody about it as soon as you know that you are pregnant, they may end up finding a reason to reject you during your probationary period over that issue. Otherwise, the worst thing that could happen may be that they delay your entry into the DOC until after you have given birth. You may not want to do that but, at least you won't be jeopardizing a future there. GOOD LUCK!

Corrections officer Training Academy can you refuse to be tasered?

I really want to become a correctional officer, I have been doing research and found that you must be pepper sprayed and tasered before graduation. I also came acrossed reports of how individuals from the Academy ended up on disability because it caused them to have nerve damage and other medical issues. If it is necessary then I have no problem with it but I also don't want it to ruin my entire life. I'm from NY so I will be attending an Academy here.

Can you become a corrections officer with a general discharge?

Nope. They will research why you got a GD, and you will be disqualified. Hell, if you got "fired" from the military for drug use, do you really think they will hire you to enforce law and order in a prison full of drug offenders? Guess you should have thouyght of al that BEFORE you did drugs. You did know they were illegal, didn;t you?
