Can You Mix Mehron Paradise Paints

Which paint is used for face painting?

Face paint is a category of cosmetic, it is a product intended for and specifically formulated to be used on human skin. Part of this criteria is that it must contain Cosmetic Grade Pigments and hypoallergenic ingredients. That being said, there are very inexpensive brands which are not harmful but which have low durability and may cause skin irritation. As already noted here, tempera and acrylic craft paints or even watercolor paints are not suitable for skin, they were not designed for this purpose. A search online easily finds photos of people with skin which has been irritated or even scarred by the use of such paints intended for crafts use. Many extremely inexpensive face paints are of rather poor quality. One of the less expensive face paints that is actually of usable quality is Palmer Face Paint. This is the same company that invented Paint-by-Number kits. A bit thick, it isn’t great but it is usable. If price is not an object, the professional theatrical makeup company Mehron Cosmetics also makes a liquid face paint, but mainly sells various other products used by professional makeup artists for stage and film. Their products are far superior to daily wear cosmetics or face paints, but are more expensive.Their liquid face paint is a low end product for them (you really have to search to find it on their site) but it is head and shoulders above most others in quality. Professional theatrical makeup manufacturer Ben Nye also sells excellent face paint in cake form. I prefer liquid face paints for hygienic reasons because you can portion out small amounts that are discarded immediately afterwards, preventing the paint that touches anyone’s face from coming in contact with another person‘s skin. The antibacterial compounds added to most face paints will not prevent transmission of a number of skin-borne maladies. I use sponges and pointed cotton swabs which are disposed of or brushes which are immediately disinfected between uses.Various excellent brands exist: Ruby Red, FAB, Graftobian, and Kryolan among them. Good brands include Diamond FX, Wolfe, even Snazaroo is decent. In any case, when I or my students do face painting we follow very strict hygienic procedures (stricter than those called for by the International Face Painters Association) and we still have customers sign waivers, because approximately one in 10,000 people will still react to face paint even though it is hypoallergenic.

What is the best paint to use on your body?

image from Puck’n KhaosWater based, in my opinion. And what that means is that the paint is activated by water and it comes off with — you guessed it! — soap and water.Because I’m a black woman who body paints herself (yup, that’s me above and below) I have to find the most opaque body paints out there, and my go-to is Ben Nye’s MagicCakes. It’s opaque and non-streaky when you brush it on.I also use Mehron’s Liquid Paints in black, browns, and white because I know I’m going to use a LARGE amount of those colors, so might as well stock up.One thing I’ll say about Ben Nye though is that, don’t let the size of the cake fool you.I’ve had cakes that have lasted MONTHS before I hit “tin”, doing a whole variety of looks.Again, it’s my go-to.There are some alcohol based body paints out there, but I wouldn’t suggest it because you need a specific alcohol to get it off.It won’t come off with soap and water, no matter how hard you scrub. It’s good if the model is going under water or getting wet, but again, getting it off can be a pain. Some other popular favorites that I know of are:WolfeFXKryolanand GraftobianYou can google any of these and they’ll come up.I’ve never used those (3), but from watching body painting shows like Skin Warsfrom the TV series, Skin WarsOr watching other YouTubers, they mention these kinds of products often, as well as some others I didn’t mention. From Jordan Hanz’s YouTubeTHE BEST WAY TO LEARN ABOUT BODY PAINTING IS TO:1. Go on YouTube and find a body painter you like, like Jordan or Madeyewlook2. See what materials they’re using and go and make the investment into buying them.3. Follow along with their video tutorial.4. Learn from the experience.5. Repeat. And one last thing, don’t cheap out and use either acrylic paint or Party City Paint.Acrylic paint is not meant to be put on your skin. And Party City’s paints are crap.Hope this helped. If branding yourself online is a subject you’re interested in, I’ve written a few articles about it. You can read them here: BLOG — Puck'n Khaos

Can I use ANY paint for face painting?

Yes, you can use the cheap bottles of Acrylic paint that comes from craft stores that are only 79 cents, in the plastic "squirtty" like bottles.("Crafters Edition, Anita's all purpose acrylic) It is an air dry paint that will crack and fall off at the end of the day and is not harmful. I have done many face paintings myself with this particular type of paint, it has NEVER harmed a child, adult, anyone. And it is MUCH easier to apply on skin then typical face paint that is very oily and rubs off on clothing and other things. I would just recommend not using a metallic color, and simply check the bottle for "non-toxic". (And Temperas SUCK)

Face painting?

I am a face painter and would be happy to give you some ideas. I have a few simpler ideas on my site. Yes there are more elaborate ones there also. If you would like I can send you some pictures of easier cheekart. Just email me. Also. An easy way to creat GREAT looking cheekart is to use stamps. You can use the regular foam stamps that you buy in the craft section at walmart or whatever store you prefer. Horses and unicrons are VERY popular with the little girls. I use the horse stamp and draw the horn on. I use mehron paradise paints however if it's not in your budget I did start out using regular acrylic craft paint. Most face painters start out that way. But since I actually charge for my services now I feel it is important to use the best products for my clients. If you use glittle make sure it is VERY fine glitter. If you have any other questions or would like to see other pictures please email me.

Acrylic Paint on Face?

Not true. Acrylic paint is bad for face painting because it's very uncomfortable and highly likely to cause allergies. Facial skin is very sensitive. There are people making a living face painting with acrylics and it makes me sick.

I have, on many occasions, had kids ask me if face painting would hurt or tell me they were allergic. I had to explain to them the difference between using makeup and using acrylic paint, how to tell the difference, and that acrylics are totally inappropriate.

But despite all that, what you have said is totally untrue. If you are not allergic to it and did not have a reaction, you're fine. And nope, no lead in it.

Next time get some real makeup. I recommend Kryolan Aquacolor and Mehron Paradise. Silly Farm (www.sillyfarm.com) is who I buy all my stuff from and I've been very happy but there are other suppliers too. Heather at Silly Farm has always treated me right.

What kind of paint is used in face painting?

Tons of paint *is* used, so you need to be careful. Only professional quality water-based makeup, *never paint* should be used. I strongly recommend Kryolan Aquacolor and Mehron Paradise. Both products can be purchased from Silly Farm Supplies at www.sillyfarm.com and they've always treated me right. LaRocks has Paradise at www.larocks.com and NorCostCo has a limited selection of both at www.norcostco.com (I strongly recommend Silly Farm though - they cater to face painters and have amazing service and all their products are at least safe)

For designs, Snazaroo's website has an amazing selection at www.snazaroo.us . Click "photo gallery". I do not recommend their makeup, it isn't durable and it just isn't as good as competing products. They say theirs is the safest, but I've talked to product reps from Mehron and Kryolan who disagree. All meet FDA regs for cosmetics (except for the blacklight Kryolan colors which are a special effects product).

I really look up to Mark Reid, both as a painter and a person (and hey, he has the same first name as me so that counts for something!), www.markreidart.com is his site and Silly Farm sells a DVD by him called "On your mark, get set, paint!" that is *VERY VERY* helpful and well worth the money!

Blessings,

Mark
