Chemistry Help Rhodium

Chemistry Help Please!?

1.) Acetic acid, which is used to make many important compounds, is produced from methanol and carbon monoxide (which are themselves both derived from methane in natural gas) by a process called the Monsanto process. This endothermic reaction is run over a rhodium and iodine catalyst at 175 °C and 1 atm of pressure. Predict whether each of the following changes in the equilibrium system will shift the system to more products, to more reactants,
or to neither. Explain each answer in two ways: (1) by applying Le Châtelier’s principle and (2) by describing the effect of the change on the forward and reverse reaction rates.

Rh/I2
CH3OH(g) + CO(g) + 207.9 kJ CH3CO2H(g) <---> CH3CO2H(g)
175 °C
1 atm
a. The concentration of CO is increased by the addition of more CO.

b. The concentration of CH3OH is decreased.

c. The concentration of CH3CO2H(g) is decreased by removing the acetic acid as it forms.

d. The temperature is decreased from 300 °C to 175 °C.

2.) Nitrosyl chloride is used to make synthetic detergents. It decomposes to form nitrogen monoxide and chlorine gas. 2NOCl(g) + energy 2NO(g) + Cl2(g)
Without directly changing the concentration of NOCl, give two changes could you make for this reaction at equilibrium to shift the reaction to the left and minimize the decomposition of the NOCl?

I need Help with Chemistry!!!?

1. You look at which has the smallest molecular mass, so you'd go - H - He - Li - Be - B - C - N - O -F

So the smallest is C.

2. Dunno. Haven't got periodic table. Sorry.

3. Electrons always fills up in the order 1S - 2S - 2P - 3S - 3P - 4S - 3D - 4P etc. S orbitals can hold two electrons, P can hold 6, and D can hold 10. Therefore, work out how many electrons you have and fill in the orbitals.

4. All to do with the numberr of electrons again, so look at the periodic table and see hlow many electrons Krypton has, then look how many Se has. When something is negative, it means it's gained electrons (in this case 2), so add these 2 to the core elecxtrons to give the total number. When something is positiove, it's lost electrons (in this case 1), so take 1 off it;'s core electrons, aqnd whichever one is equal to krypton is your answer.

5. As above. Take off your 3 electrons and fill up the shells.

The radius of an atom of rhodium (Rh) is about 1.3 Å.
(a)
(i)Express this distance in nano meter. (nm).
(ii) Express this distance in pico meters (pm).
(b) How many rhodium (Rh) atoms would have be lined up to span 1.0 mm?
(c) If the atom is assumed to be sphere, what is the voulme in cm^3 of a single rhodium (Rh) atom? (answer in cm^3)

What is the chemical structure of rhodium?

Rhodium is a metal and thus an element. As such the only structure you could ask for is its crystal structure:Crystal system: cubic, Bravais type: face centered cubic (fcc)Space group 225: Fm-3m aka Fm(3-bar)mcell parameter: a = 380.4 pm, 4 units (in this case = ATOMS) per cellBut why 4 atoms only? As you can see 14… ?! In this SPECIAL case every black ball represents an atom!WELCOME TO THE DUNGEON OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHY! :-D Or better call it a TORTURE-CHAMBER! :-DSimple! Neighboring crystal cells share those black positions with each other!In this picture 5*5*5 = 125 crystal cells are combined!Each ball is an atom! Look for the FIVE like on the dice below and you will realize it!Check a corner of that crystallite! You will realize the cell again!So in each corner there is just 1/8 atom! Times eight corners! 1/8 * 8 = 1 atomPlus the faces: 1/2 atom per face! Times six faces! 1/2 * 6 = 3 atomsThat’s 4 atoms in total!There’s no more information applicable to answer your question!

Chemistry HELP! Unit conversion?

This question has been driving me nuts for the last 2 hours. I can't figure it out!!

Rhodium, a metal used as a catalyst and in jewelry, currently sells for $1500. per troy ounce. If 6.022x 10^23 rhodium atoms have a mass of 102.9 grams, how many atoms could you buy for exactly one nickel? (1 troy oz = 31.1035g)

Help?! Chemistry 110 formula/equation. Please Help Me Understand...?

Rh2(SO4)3 + 6 NaOH → 2 Rh(OH)3 + 3 Na2SO4

It is the same as most stoichiometric calculations: 1) convert to moles, 2) use the molar ratio, 3) convert to grams.

(0.620 g Rh(OH)3) / (153.92763 g Rh(OH)3/mol) x (3 mol Na2SO4 / 2 mol Rh(OH)3) x
(142.0428 g Na2SO4/mol) = 0.858 g Na2SO4

What is rhodium?

Rhodium is a chemical element with symbol Rh and atomic number 45. It is a rare, silvery-white, hard, corrosion-resistant and chemically inert transition metal. It is a noble metal and a member of the platinum group. It has only one naturally occurring isotope, Rh-103. Rhodium has 45 protons and 45 electrons with 58 neutrons with a electron configuration of 2–8–18–16–1 and the atomic weight of 103 atomic mass units. Naturally occurring rhodium is usually found as the free metal, alloyed with similar metals, and rarely as a chemical compound in minerals such as bowieite and rhodplumsite. It is one of the rarest and most valuable precious metals. Rhodium has an melting point of 2,237 Kelvin, or 3,567 degrees Fahrenheit and a boiling point of 3,968 Kelvin, or 6,683 degrees Fahrenheit. Rhodium was discovered in 1804 by William Hyde Wollaston. Rhodium was named after the Greek word, rhodos, which means rose. In 2007, rhodium cost approximately eight times more than gold, 450 times more than silver, and 27,250 times more than copper by weight. In 2008, the price briefly rose above $10,000 per ounce. The economic slowdown of the 3rd quarter of 2008 pushed rhodium prices sharply back below $1,000 per ounce ; the price rebounded to $2,750 by early 2010, but in late 2013, the prices were less than $1000. In November 2015, Rhodium costs 740.00$ per ounce. Rhodium has 39 isotopes. The longest isotope of rhodium is Rh-102 with a half life of 207 days and the shortest isotope of rhodium is Rh-89 with a half life of 10 milliseconds. Rhodium was used for data storage. Rhodium has compounds like Hexadecacarbonylhexarhodium, Tetrarhodium dodecacarbonyl, Cyclooctadiene rhodium chloride dimer, Rhodium carbonyl chloride, Rhodium acetate, Rhodocene, Rhodium trichloride, Dirhodium trioxide, Ytterbium dirhodium disilicide, Pentaamminechlororhodium dichloride, Xenon hexafluororhodate, and Rhodium hexafluoride.

make sense?

now imagine the upper left, middle and lower right atom are touching.

the length of the diagonal = the radius of the upper left + diameter of the center + radius of the lower right atoms.

ie.. Diagonal = 4r

and via pythagoreus..

(diagonal)² = (0.390 nm)² + (0.390 nm)²

or...
4r = √2 x (0.390 nm)
r = √2 x (0.390 nm) / 4 = 0.138 nm = 138 pm

*********
as a check..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodium
lists it as 134 pm

What are these steps to solving these 2 chemistry problems?

According to one table that I found online, the radius of a rhodium atom is 1.83 X 10^-10 meters. So, the diameter will be 3.66 X 10^-10 m

You can do the first problem either in meters or in millimeters. So, first, convert the distance spanned (1 mm) into meters:

1.0 mm ( 1 m/1000 mm) = 1 X 10^-3 m

Now, divide that distance by the diameter of a single atom:

1 X 10^-3 m / 3.66X10^-10 m = 2.7 X 10^6. So, 2.7 million atoms will be required to span that 1 mm space.

Now to calculate the volume of a single atoms, you know that the equation for the volume of a sphere is : V = 4/3 (pi) r^3

So, first, convert the radius into cm:
1.83 X 10^-10 m ( 100 cm/m) = 1..83 X 10^-8 cm

Now calculate the volume:

V = 4/3 (3.14) (1.83X 10^-8)^3 = 2.6 X 10^-23 cm^3
