Chinchilla Is Digging At Me

Why is my chinchilla digging/pushing me?

They do that when annoyed. They physically push you and dig at things in annoyance, and might even bite you a little bit. Just leave her alone for a little bit. If she does it often, then consider that something might be stressing her out, like loud noises, too small living condition, etc.

Why is my chinchilla digging on my knee and squeaking?

I let him run round in my living room and sometimes he just comes up to me and jumps on my knee and digs. I don't know what he is doing but he digs with all four paws and does a few quiet squeak noises. What is he doing?

Why is my Chinchilla digging and grabbing me?

I have had my chin for about 6 months and a few weeks ago he started chasing, digging, and grabbing my feet. It has now progressed to the point were he will dig, grab, and even nib me anywhere (feet, legs, hands, arms, etc) when i lay or sit with him. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't hurt at all... actually tickles so much I have to pull away all the time, but I want to verify he's not trying to tell me something detrimental. Sometimes its very random, other times I know right when he's going to start. For example, he chews my baseboards a lot and when I tell him "no" and tap him away he'll turn towards me and does it. It's strange because before he would just run away when I tapped him from the walls. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is normal behavior at his age. Facts about him below...

My chin is an 8 month old mosaic male I bought from a small local breeder. I let him run around my apt bedroom (~24x15ft space) 1-2 times a day for an hour or two (note the time of day changes because I'm a college student and my days fluctuate a lot). I feed him, give him hay and alfalfa, and fresh water everyday. His cage is on the small side being ~18x24x20in in diameter, but I plan to get him a much larger cage after the summer. I will randomly get him toys, chew sticks, alfalfa blocks, or toilet paper rolls to keep him busy while I'm in class or meetings. Please let me know if you need any other information.

Thank you for your assistance.

How to give chinchilla dust bath?

You dont' want to use a dry shampoo like the other person said. Chinchillas need a dust bath. My daughter had a chinchilla and all we did to teach him was put the dust bath in his cage (you need a little plastic house for them to bath in and fill the bottom with dust) and he eventually did it himself. It was very comical. He would go in and just spin and spin with his tail sticking out! Once they get the hang of it you don't want to leave it in the cage though. Just put it in when they need it.

Is Cat Litter Bad For Chinchilla?

Yes, it will ruin their coat. You should buy critter litter, you can find it at most pet stores in the aisle with the chinchilla/small pet items. It usually comes in a small box or bag, not a huge bag like cat litter since you won't be using as much as often. It's absorbent and controls odor pretty well also, and this would be much better for your chinchilla as it is designed for them to use.
If it's a solid floor cage, get some pine wood shavings to put on the floor so he can dig around in those instead. Chins love to dig, so if litter's the only option he'll probably just make a mess with it.

If you've never had a chin before and don't know much about them, i would advise googling chinchillas and reading up about them on a few websites. They take a lot of care and are delicate creatures that need to be treated a certain way. I read a lot about them before I got my first and the first 2 I had ended up dying before I had them even a year because of things like feeding them too many treats and letting the room get too warm.
they are great pets though, good luck with yours!

My chinchilla screamed?

Sounds like the chinchilla death scream. Scares me every time I hear it. I rush into the chin room and all the chins look at me like I'm stupid. :) I don't know why they do it, but I've not yet had it happen when there is any injury or illness. I swear they do it just to scare the crap out of you.

This site has a lot of chinchilla sounds on it. http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/index_en... You might want to give a listen and see if any of them match up.

If you have more questions that you can't find the answer to on that site, check http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com. If you do a search on "sounds" you should get plenty of hits. You can join the forum as well, but you need to be 14 due to COPPA regulations. Whether you join or not, you can still read all the threads.

Gerbil vs chinchilla which one make a more friendly pet?

I had a hamster who recently died and I wanted to replace him with a new pet don't really want a new hamster so can someone tell me what having a gerbil or a chinchilla is like and can you answer some questions I have
-do they like to be cuddled with and held
-are they friendly around people
-do they need a friend(I know rats do but I'm not allowed to get them bc my parents are stereotypical when it comes to them carrying deseases and biting)
-AND MOST IMPORTANLY i want an animal that won't spend its whole life trying to escape like my hamster did
