Is it fair to say that conservatives = narrow-minded, and liberals = broad-minded?
Aren't liberals more likely to be pluralistic and tolerant toward other's differences, and aren't conservatives more likely to be intolerant and bigoted? Think about it. It's conservatives that don't want gays to get married. They don't want gays to have the same rights as everyone else. And those that are more conservatives don't even think gay people are really "gay" but are rather corrupted by some kind of immorality. Heterosexual liberals on the other hand, have the stance of "it's your life, and as long as you are not hurting anyone, then we shouldn't infringe upon it". Conservatives state that they should infringe upon homosexual's rights. During segregation, who were the conservatives, and who were the liberals? The conservatives wanted to maintain Jim Crow laws, while liberals wanted break free from segregation. The conservatives wanted to maintain slavery, while liberals were the abolishonists. But let's also look at the definition and etymology of the word itself. Liberal - comes from the Latin word "Liberus", and "liber" means "free". Liberals put freedom first, and want everyone to enjoy the same freedoms. Conservative - comes from the Latin word conservare, meaning, "to keep, preserve". Conservatives are afraid of change and still want to maintain the status quo, even in the status quo is the problem and is wrong. Conservatives are thus less likely to be progressive than liberals. You can even compare Obama & Bush's style of governing. Obama is constantly reaching out and looking for a wide array of ideas & input, including Republican ideas -- a "tolerant" and pluralistic liberal. Bush on the otherhand was polarizing towards non-Republicans, or towards Republicans with different opinions -- a "narrow-minded" conservative. This is why conservativism is dying and Republicans continue to lose seats in the House & Senate. Democrats are only 1 seat away from a fillibuster-proof majority in the Senate. It appears Democrats will win more seats in next year's elections. Your thoughts.
As a liberal, what do you think conservatives just need to accept?
Climate change is real, and we are running out of time to combat it. Conservatives should be helping to find conservative solutions to the problem rather than denying its existence.Supporting the troops means actually supporting them- funding the VA and the GI bill, providing mental and physical support for veterans and their families.Coupled with that, the military budget is bloated and no one is accountable. That’s not only the result of studies, but we have numerous examples from other countries that have both much lower costs and far better outcomesIn order to believe in supply-side economics, you have to ignore facts, data, logic, individual anecdotes from places like Kansas, and literally all of human history. The Laffer Curve is a thing, but we haven’t been anywhere near the right side of it in my lifetime.Can we stop pretending that the Republican Party actually believes in personal responsibility, fiscal reponsibility, or small government? Don’t believe words, believe actions. And votes.If you want fewer abortions, you have to create policies which result in fewer abortions. In other words, creating a society where fewer women wish to have them-sex education, contraception, and better support for mothers and children both pre-and post-natally. And yes, that means making them available when the pregnant woman wishes. It’s still her body. Banning them does little but drive them underground where they are both more dangerous and more numerous.
Conservative and Liberal?
hmm hard to explain, i'm a liberal myself! well conservatives tend to look to the past for their answers, they want to preserve the status quo, so therefore typpically for heterosexual marriage, against gay marriage, the more extreme conservatives seem to be suspicious of foreigners, very nationalistic etc. liberals are more forward/progressive looking and tolerant, e.g for gay marriage, pro-choice on abortion issues, often unconventional. punks are typically left wing (another name for liberal) anti-establishment. well i hope i didn't offend anyone and this is slightly biased coming from a liberal, i accept people who are conservative as well, and IMO extreme right OR left wing is bad! hope this helps a little..it does take a while to understand..maybe take the quiz underneath and it may give you an idea of your political beliefs..ooh btw extreme right/conservative is capitalist i think and extreme left is communist..ideally a happy medium is best :)
Christians if you believe God set the moral standard then why do you have different moral beliefs?
A theistic criticism of atheism is that it provides no moral standard to live by. Which should be obvious because it is not a belief system. Anyways if God sets the moral standard then why do you guys fall on different sides of moral issues. You name it! Gun control, Abortion, Gay rights, Gay marriage, Providing aide to foreign nations in need (i.e. Africa), etc...etc.. Where is the moral standard? I believe which is not an effect of atheism since it is not a belief system - that ethics is situational. Of course it`s ok too lie and kill in certain situations. People might say well where do I an atheist get a concept of what is right and what is wrong. Because it is apart of our nature as intelligent human beings to differitianate between the two. But who says which is which? Soceity, basic intelligence, Social conditioning, adverse effects of actions taken, etc. etc. A very blane defintion of wrong or evil is that which causes unecessary harm. Your thoughts?
