Copyright And Writing Workshop Question

Can i copyright my book if its not finished yet?

You already own copyright on each paragraph the moment you created it. As the copyright owner, you have the exclusive right to duplicate and distribute it to others. If you upload it, you automatically give everyone on the planet an implied license to copy it for themselves, free of charge. If you do not WANT others to copy your works freely, choose another means for distribution (e.g., paid subscription, whatnot).

Be sure to put a copyright notice on your works, as reminder that you own the rights. If you want to actually sue someone in the US for infringement you will also have to register your copyright, and you can do that for $35 for each "title" (e.g., Chapter 1, or the entire book, or all books you have written in an entire year...).

Whether or not you have a registered copyright, you have the right to ask unlawful publishers on the web to promptly remove copies that show up there. You file a "DMCA copyright notification" and they are required by law to honor your request to remove thing posted illegally by their subscribers. 17 USC 512.

I’m an aspiring writer, I have basic questions. Do we need ourselves to get registered anywhere to write?

In essence, no. You (we) can write, really, on any platform, anywhere. If you’re asking whether you need to sign up for Word or anything like that, the answer is: whatever you choose. You can write anywhere, whether it’s on a computer or on paper. Although, assuming you mean registered on a website, I’ll try to narrow it down to what you want to know.Right off the bat: why are you writing? Are you writing for fun and experience, or for profit?Let’s start with the former. You can get noticed in many ways. There are tons of websites where you can submit your stories/books/poetry for others to read for free. This also means that you get nothing but exposure from these websites. One, for example, is Wattpad. It’s free and well-known, and many aspiring authors go there to have somewhere to publish their work. You can also start your own blog on Tumblr, or create your own website with Wordpress or Wix and publish your work on there. Now, your question was very general, so I’ll say that you DO NOT have to use these platforms, if all you want to do is write for yourself. But that, I mean all you want to do is use writing as an outlet and/or practice before publishing. Being a “real” author doesn’t necessarily mean being popular, or having started writing early on these platforms. If you want to write to publish (get money from your writing), then I can’t help you much. I don’t have experience in publishing, but I can give you some spare basics. First of all, do you want to be published by a publisher, or self-publish? There are many options as to what route to go about both of those, but I’m not in the position to explain them. If you want to know more, I suggest researching through other websites or waiting for another person to reply to your question.I hope this answered all you wanted to know.

How do you copyright some Kindle eBooks for free?

As soon as you write anything, you own the copyright if it’s an original work. If you publish it at Amazon then the date of publication will be present on it. If someone else were to claim copyright at a later time, you could easily prove your earlier publication. In the US you can register the work for a fee but really it’s not necessary if you can prove earlier publication. The only time when this would be of value is if you produce the work and do not publish until a much later date. Even then you could prove your earlier copyright by sending the document to yourself at something like a Google email address or a Dropbox account. In this case the document would be date and time stamped. In practice, you probably don’t need to worry about copyright since it’s relatively easy to prove copyright at an earlier date. Where it does become an issue is when someone takes your story, makes some changes and claims the work as their own. That’s where copyright lawyers make their money.

What makes good writing?

Practice. The more you write, the better you become.

You want your writing to affect people. I believe the ability to create characters with depth and situations that leave your audience wanting to know what happens next is important. Basically, if you ever sit in on a writing workshop, you want people to respond to what you've written. If no one responds, this is a bad thing.

Read, read, read. Writers who don't read probably shouldn't write.

Also, one person wrote that you need a large vocabulary to be a good writer. This is not accurate. Unless you plan on writing text books or educational papers, you want people to be able to read with ease. People read for pleasure and escape. While I admit to often reading with a dictionary close to me, I do it for my own pleasure. I love words and I'm also a writer. As a writer, my goal is to take you on a journey with me. I want your attention. I want you to feel what I feel and I want you to learn. There is always a big difference between talking at someone vs. talking with someone. If I want a lecture, I sit in a classroom, or I give one.

Practice, read, and educate yourself. There is no other way to do it. Also, learn to take criticism. I'd tell you how to do this, but I don't think it ever really gets easier.

If you want some great examples of writing, get a subscription to The Sun. Awesome sort of describes them. Avoid vanity publishing websites. Be wary of certain giant websites who offer classes and advice on writing. Trust me when I tell you, they do offer classes, but they also get paid to tell you that you're amazing.

Good luck.

Are user manuals copyrighted?

It really depends in what country this question applies to, as copyright law differs slightly country to country. But there are two principles at play here:Once something is “published” to the public, it usually is automatically protected by copyright law. So yes, an instruction manual by default fall under copyrighted work.Copyright is a permission-based law. Anything goes with the proper permission from the copyright holder whether or not there are commercial terms tied to that permission; copyright law basically protects the rights holder from any unauthorised infringement. So by principle, uploading screenshots of user manuals is infringing copyright,if it is done without permission from the manufacturer. But pursuing this kind of copyright infringement is wholly up to the manufacturer(s) in question, on whether they think it constitutes a commercial loss or not. My guess is most of the time, manufacturers won’t care as much as the potential monetary loss might be negligible. Also, the US has the DMCA policy that basically protects user-generated content on a website from immediate litigation from the copyright holders; if a copyright holder thinks a certain website hosts content they deem infringing, they can send a takedown notice to the website and the website must take it down. The burden of proof lies with the copyright holder, not the website creator. So to summarize:yes it is technically illegal, within whatever copyright law framework applies.probably not.

If I write a story for my creative fiction class and turn it in for a grade, am I allowed to continue writing it and get it published, or will that somehow be plagiarizing myself?

First, despite what many answers have claimed, it is possible to plagiarize yourself: Self-Plagiarism: How to Define it and Why You Should Avoi... | AJE | American Journal ExpertsNow, what you propose probably doesn’t count as self-plagiarism, since class work is submitted for private review rather than publication. However, it’s just good manners to mention your story’s genesis as a class project in a foreword, or acknowledge the critical contributions of the critiques you received. Authors routinely thank their editors and other people who help make their publications possible; it’s not a stretch to see your creative writing class as participating in this process too.At the very least, you should mention this fact to your editor or publisher, in case your creative writing class decides to publish your work without first securing the necessary copyrights.
