'Profuse' is many, abundant = he was profuse with his thanks.
'Profound' is meaningful, deep, considered = his thoughts on religious matters were very profound.
'Pretentious' is similar to pompous, showing off but in an affected way (assuming an attitude that isn't true to how you are, merely being like that to impress people) = he was trying to impress people but he only succeeded in being pretentious.
I think that 'Preclude' means to prevent by a previous action = the glue that he used precluded the use of nails to hold the shelf together.
'Prodigal' as in The Prodigal Son, the bible tale.
Wasteful, squandering - the tale of the prodigal son is about a boy who left with a third of his father's money and wished him dead, only to return poverty stricken and humbled. He was received with love by his father who was just happy to get his son, whom he loved, back alive. The son realises his father's love for him and repents. He was prodigal with his wealth.
'Prodigious' means plentiful, enormous in size, extraordinary = he had prodigious talent for a child his age.
