Is there cruise control on a manual transmission car?
Yes, any standard trans can have cruise control. You may have to manually shift if you're climbing a steep hill, but otherwise they work just fine - even on 4 cylinder engines. It will simply try to maintain speed in the gear you have selected - when you push on the clutch pedal, the cruise disconnects, just like when you push on the brakes. So, if you're climbing a steep hill and the xcar can't maintainspeed in top gear, simply shift down a gear and put your foot on the gas. Now you can re-engage the cruise while in 3rd or 4th gear (it will still work), or wait until you can get back into 5th before re-engaging. The cruise system simply applies more gas if it detects the car slowing down. It doesn't do anything to the gearbox at all. (Just like with an auto. The cruise control doesn't shift then, either - the trans does that in response to what the throttle is doing. Cruise only affects the throttle opening.) I've had it on a '93 Mitsu Eclipse 2.0 (non-turbo) and an '88 Ford Escort GT 1.9, and both did just fine despite being somewhat anemic in the power department. Good luck!
