Why is my sense of smell so sensitive unlike others?
@Ilumina: You also have a very intresting point as well about focus... Hmm... so if I focus less, maybe it will help me tolerate them? How about my hearing and sight... I have been told I have very sharp eyes... and there was this job I used to have as a visual inspector on integrated circuits and I never had to use magnifying glasses to see the bent leads... and I identified distortions that not even those working there for almost their entire lives noticed... I don't know, sometimes they irritate me because it's like I notice every little error that are actually tolerable for majority...

Dennis, I understand the question but, in actuality, your question is based on human terms. The dogs brain is able to handle the different scents experienced. Elizabeth had a good analogy about having the ability to discern notes of a different frequency. We humans do that without thinking twice … as long as we have perfect hearing.Dogs noses are so sensitive, they can actually smell chemical changes in their humans. That’s why they make such good dogs for previous victims of heart attacks and strokes and epileptics. Prior to the actual event, a chemical imbalance starts to manifest itself in the body. Your service dog is trained to recognize those smells long before an event happens and will bugger you crazy until you take your meds. That’s a fact.

Whenever I get hit by the slightest cigarette smoke my sense of smell goes out of whack for a week+.I pick up smells in hyper sensitive mode. Things I normally ignore or cannot even sense become highly offensive. Are there any easy cures?

What might cause a heightened sense of smell?
If this is not your normal state, see about getting a check-up with your doctor. Sometimes early pregnancy can cause this; so can amphetamine abuse or benzodiazepine withdrawal. So can some forms of epilepsy or brain tumors. Def. worth checking if this is a recent development.

That was a very very early sign for me, with both of my pregnancies. I believe you could be preg but it was just too early to test.
