Do I Need An Extraction For Braces

Do I need to get teeth extracted for braces?

Yes.You seem to have incompetent lips and and open bite in normal posture, with retroclined lower front teeth. In simple words, your lips don't close in rest position, you from teeth don't close and lower front teeth are exceptional tilted towards the outside. Plus your lower wisdom tooth are tilted, but i might be wrong but I see a bit of caries in the tooth next to you lower wisdom teeth. You will have an extensive diagnostic check up if you visit a proper orthodontist depending on which either your 1st premolar or second premolar will be removed.Your Premolars are tooth marked 5 upper and 5/6 lower (Ignore the numbering system)The space created will be used to push your front teeth back.I would honestly suggest the extraction technique (camouflage) as the retention is better in such cases. And post treatment facial profile will be much more pleasant.Your 27, not much skeletal problems why go for extensive facial surgery. If they meant 'no extraction' as in doing an arch expansion, then I can't say that from an X-ray without doing a Boltons analysis. As a dentist currently undergoing an ortho treatment, I advice you to visit a proper orthodontist and not some other general practise dentist.

Premolar extraction for braces?

I am so confused! My orthodontist recommends me to have my first four premolars removed, but I know that this can cause TMJ and facial disfigurement. When I asked her about this, she said she researched this in University, and that that was found to be untrue.

But if that is untrue, why are there orthodontists who are against extraction, and why are there dentists who reverse the premolar extraction and place implants in the positions of the missing teeth? Surely before this is a feasible industry, it must be a problem.

And I asked her if there was an alternative to extraction, to which she replied: 'No. Not in your case. In some cases the front teeth can be brought forwards. But not in your case.'

And when I asked her 'What about expansion?', she said that she had never heard of that, but then the assistant said: 'Expansion in your case would mean that there was not enough bone structure to support the teeth.'

And, sometimes they contradict each other, which I hate, because one orthodontist said that there was no functional reason for braces in my case, and another said there was, but didn't specify what, even when I asked.

My friend's orthodontist said that premolars should never be extracted, as that causes TMJ, but that molars may be extracted to reduce the chance of relapse.

Surely they can't both be right? In which case, one is wrong, and I think it's my orthodontist. But I can't change orthodontist, because I get braces for free because I am in the UK and it's free in some cases here. And my parents can't afford to get it done privately, as I am from a poor background.

And the members of my class who have had premolars extracted seem fine, but I don't know if I will be, and I have heard stories about TMJ and so on, especially on the Internet.

And to be honest, I am happy with my natural teeth, but my mum is not, she keeps telling me they're ugly, and that no-one will want to speak to someone with teeth like 'that'. But I have loads of friends, so, she's obviously wrong.

The only issue I have with my natural teeth is that I am worried they may give me TMJ too. I am terrified of getting TMJ, it sounds horrible.

My teeth are very (and I mean very) severely crowded, so I don't know if extraction would be the right thing.

And my question is: should I have my premolars (bicuspids) extracted, or is that bad? If so, why?

Four teeth extraction for braces?

So recently I got four teeth on the sides of my mouth pulled for braces. I decided to do research on it after I got it done (dumb on my part), and many people said that they regretted doing it.
I researched and researched and many people said that it causes sleep apnea, TMJ, pre mature sagging of the face...so many things. It makes sense because the teeth would be pulled back so far, and there would be nothing to support the lips and skin so it would all sink in. I'm a scared that this is going to happen and I don't want to do it anymore.

I already got the teeth removed but I haven't gone back yet to get the moving back process actually starting.

Would a cosmetic dentist be able to put teeth back in? If you could please do anything to help me with this, it would mean the world to me. I can't do this...I just need a way out of this and quickly. my next appointment is February 5th

Open bite braces - should I have teeth extraction?

Hi, I am from Japan. I developed a mild open bite, probably because I used to bite my tongue while asleep. The orthodontist suggested orthodontics and said that I might need to extract two or four teeth in the process, but it didn't sound good to extract healthy teeth. I asked what if I refuse to extract teeth when they suggest, and she said I will have a slight protruding front teeth, which she also said isn't noticeable. So I am wondering, which will benefit me, extracting teeth or not extracting?

Thank you.

Teeth extraction for braces-will it hurt?

I had two 4 adult teeth extracted also. (2 before and 2 after braces, the ones after had to be taken out by cutting into my gums because they never grew in. So they had to take them out before they grew in and ruined all of the braces work.)

I have had a lot of teeth pulled and it really isn't that bad. First off they give you plenty of numbing medicine( they do this by giving you LITTLE shots in your mouth that hurt a little but nothing more than maybe a wincing pain.) Then (once u are COMPLETLY numb)(When they ask if you can feel it when they poke you were ur supposed to be numb, be sure to tell them if you do.. believe me it is worth the extra shot so you don't have to feel the tooth getting taken out because you said you were numb.) they will just pull on the tooth an it will come out. Be aware tho that you may hear some cracking and crunching noises and you will feel pressure. (One time my tooth broke in half... it was kinda funny.. and didn't hurt at all lol)

then they will just give you gauz and you will bleed for a bit and u won't be able to eat or drink through a straw or whatever.. they will tell you what you can't do and give you instructions on how to clean out the toothless spaces. just don't drink through a straw!! lol yeahh its not that bad

As for the braces- it takes at least a month to get fully used to them.. and they hurt more than an extraction... they ache a lot(for the first weeks of it they will ache but will get better each day and ib profun helps a bundle) at each tightening the aching will lessen. Be sure to clean inbetween, above, inside and outside and under the braces.. if you don't, when you get them off u may have a lot of cavities and yellow spots or white spots on your teeth.

It will take about 1 or 2 months for the gaps to be gone and however long the orthodontist say for everything else to straighten out

btw I am 15 and been through sooo much crap with dentist.. I had HORRIBLE teeth, but I am so thankfull for all the work done. It was definatly worth it.

Well good luck to you!! oh and p.s. umm ur gums are going to feel sooo funny when ur done.. lol u won't even feel ur lip probably.. its kinda cool haha

I refuse to have teeth extracted with braces?

GOOD FOR YOU!!! You are a very perceptive person to realize that pulling perfectly good teeth (premolars) to do orthodontics will ruin the facial profile (the exception is wisdom teeth because with them in, there are just too many teeth).

When premolars are extracted for orthodontic treatment, it causes the face to have what is called a "dished-in profile." The area around the mouth will look mushed in and the nose and chin will become more prominent. It will also make the jaws smaller than normal.

To be fair, there are a few instances where removing premolars is desired. These are called bimaxillary protrusion cases, where there is extreme "buckiness" of the upper and lower teeth. But these cases are in the minority.

Stand your ground and refuse premolar extractions; your face will look much better when your orthodontics is finished. You have a right to refuse such inferior and outdated treatment. Bicuspid extraction has also been shown to cause TMJ problems. I have retreated many bicuspid extraction cases performed by traditional orthodontists that have developed TMJ after braces had been removed.

Not pulling premolars (bicuspids) may increase treatment time by 6-9 months but that is a small sacrifice for more superior treatment and better facial esthetics.

I have to extract 4 teeth, do you suggest 2 at a time, or 1? (Braces) And...?

I will be extracting my teeth for braces and I have to extract 4 teeth

Counting from my center teeth -- The 4 teeth I'm gonna extract from both sides, top and bottom

Picture of teeth I need to extract:

The circled 4th teeth. From top and bottom, both sides.. yeah. haha

Do you suggest I extract one at a time, or two at a time? I already booked appointment with my dentist 2, but would 1 be better?

Heard there were some side effects or watever so like it's safer for 1.. i have no idea on teeth -- please gimme some info.

And, I heard it hurts a LOT after extraction, not during, but after. Does it?
