In Mexican soap operas,why are most of the actresses & actors White?
First of all, I think some people have a stereotypical view of Mexicans and assume any Mexican that doesnt fit their often racist stereotype of what a Mexican should look like, must be white. Having lighter toned skin like some of these actresses, doesnt necessarily mean that theyre entirely white. Mexicans are pretty diverse and you can find all different types of shades even within one family. Secondly, it's true that there's racism in Latin America, but the attitude that lighter is better isnt at all unique to that region. In the black community, lighter skinned girls are often considered prettier than darker skinned girls. Most of the famous black singers and actresses are lighter skinned and some are even biracial (Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Beyonce). That's also the case in India, and in Asia having larger as opposed to narrower eyes is often preferred. Even among white people, blue eyed blondes are often considered the most desirable. Another thing to take into account is the fact that Mexican telenovelas are broadcast around the world. Theyre very popular throughout Latin America as well as some regions of Asia and Eastern Europe so they probably choose actresses that have an international appeal.
