Do You Like The Beginning To My Young Adult Novel

Can Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" be considered a Young Adult novel?

No, but young adults read it anyway. I read it for school and loved it. Young adult novels are more innocent if you want to put it that way. The Lovely Bones is more adult fiction which is why the sex scenes and rape were more detailed. You would never read something like that in a young adult novel.

Must Read Young Adult or Teen novels?

I'm 14 years old and I really want to start reading more. My favorite genres are Romance and Mysteries. I've already read the Twilight series, the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, 50 Shades of Grey. And that's pretty much it. I haven't read that many books. :/ So I would LOVE it if you could give me a book list of must read books. thank you!

Do adults over 25 read young adult novels?

Sure. I’m 62 and I read young adult novels. They’re really very good. 50 YA Novels Adults Will Love, Too

Are you an adult who likes to read Young Adult novels? Why do you like them?

That is a great question. I used to teach high school English. When we started the Accelerated Reader Program, I would read books they liked (within reason), buy used copies for my room if possible and make a test for the book on AR. I found that I liked a lot of them because some of them are just very well written. I especially like mysteries so Lois Duncan, Richie Tankersly Cusick, and Heather Gude.nkauf became favorites that I could read in a couple of days. They are easy reads and usually have a really decent plot. Thanks for the question

Can I use these swear words in young adult novels?

You can use most of those in children's books, provided it's done sparingly.

What age would _you_ have stopped being shocked by them in writing? Nine? Ten? No, you weren't amazingly mature - you were average.

"how much of my descriptions are too old or gross (sexually or gory) for young adult."

Noughts and Crosses involves terrorism and rape. It's a young adult book. What on earth were you planning on writing about that's more "old or gross" than that?

YA books have YA protagonists - that's the basic distinction between them and adult books. They're not supposed to be sanitised suitable for 5 year olds.

Is it better to avoid or use slang in young adult fiction novels?

Avoid trendy slang.First of all, unless you’re under the age of 21, even if you think the slang you’re using is “in,” it’s probably not.Second, lead time in publishing is long. Let’s say you go undercover in a high school and find the newest slang around. You finish your book, edit it, submit it to agents. Maybe you get an agent. She or he submits it to editors, who give you editing suggestions. Time passes — probably a year or more — before your book hits the shelves. By then, kids are no longer saying “that’s so lit” anymore. My research shows that once adults have heard of a slang term, teenagers abandon it or start using it ironically. Finally, you want your book to have staying power, not have people read it and feel like they’re stuck in a 2017 time warp. What you should do? Make your book feel authentic in other ways. Yes, your characters should talk and interact like teens, not adults. And if you are a YA writer over the age of 25, some things have changed about teenage life you were one. That said, I think the emotions and experiences of teens are universal - first love, first heartbreak, realizing your parents are only human…
