Does The Scrotum Shrink Significantly After Neuter

Dog swollen testicals after neutering?

Please, I really need your help. Today I picked up my dog from the Vet with my mom, he was neutered and they told us that his sac would be very swollen from the surgery.

My dog is about a year and a half old, he looks half pit and maybe lab, we did find him stray. When we dropped him off we payed for his lab test (for how old and to check how he is) and for his shots and for the neutering.
When we were given back my doggie, his testicles were huge and I mean HUGE, it looks like he just had a puppy! And it's bleeding..

Please, I would really really appreciate your help, I am VERY worried about my baby..

I'm trying to think of things that might help..
His sac was not removed
It is bleeding
He was given a shot for the pain but nothing else

Please, I would kindly appreciate some advice or to at least know that this is normal =(

Why is the scrotum skin on dogs left after neutering?

I was just wondering why the go through the whole procdure of taking out what is in the inside of the scrotum, why don't they just cut the whole thing off. There might be a good reason why they leave it there. Just wondering because my male dog got fixed and they left the flappy piece of skin down there and I was afraid it would get irritated.

How long before scrotal sac tightens up after neutering?

I wish i would have known that getting it done earlier would have helped with this! Lol. We rescued him from a neglectful household at about 3 months of age (these people were keeping a 30 lb puppy in a cat crate for 6+ hours a day outside on their porch in the Georgia heat! The poor boy had no toys either, and they wondered why he kept trying to bite and chew on their 1 year old). My boyfriend and I waited until we were stable (moving around a lot during college, you know?), and had time to monitor him after surgery (thank goodness for Spring Break). I know for a fact the next pup we get, sometime far in the future, will be spayed/neutered much earlier.

Will my dogs scrotum shrink much after neutering?

" I know it's best to neuter them as early as possible." Why would you think that? Fact is other than for medical need (retained testicles for eg) it's best NOT to castrate until the dog is at least over a year - to give him a chance to mature a bit first, and you time to decide whether castration is needed at all.

Yes, his sac will shrink. It may well remain enlarged, or even bigger than before, immediately after surgery, but should eventually shrink to the point it's really not very noticable.

From Pet Informed website - for reference.

6b. Swollen, bruised, blood-filled scrotum after surgery.

6d. Wound infection.
6e. Suture-site reactions - swollen, red skin around sutures or stitches.
6f. Penis and/or urethra laceration.
6g. Excessive wound hemorrhage (excessive bleeding during or after surgery).
6h. Failure to ligate (tie off) the testicular blood vessels adequately.
6i. Post-operative renal failure (kidney failure).
6j. Anaesthetic death."

Does "chemical castration", shrink male penis length?

if you have past puberty, it shouldn't reduce penis length by any significant margin. your testicles might shrink though as a result. kinda like taking steroids where your balls shrink to peanut size cause it no longer needs to produce the hormone

Is it possible for a neutered dog to not really be neutered?

My sister has a puppy that just turned one. He had a hernia as a puppy, so the breeder's vet neutered him at the same time. She had the vet fax the paper work confirming his neuter, so we are pretty certain he WAS neutered.

Last night, we went to her friend's house to see the 5 rescues she is hosting. There was a youg girl dog who was just recently spayed. She was pregnant at the time, so I don't know if that would have a similar effect to if she were in heat. My sister's dog was going CRAZY over this female. He was whining to be near her and really just couldn't control himself. He certainly "looks" neutered, in that he he has not testicles, but he otherwise looks very "mannly". My sister's friend indicated that the penis should shrink once they are neutered. Her puppy was neutered about a month ago and has has shrunk quite a bit.

My sister's dog also marks a lot. My dog was neutered at 5 months and never marks. Any insight is greatly appreciated. We have a vet appt on Sat.

Does chemical castration using anti androgens have the same physical affects as surgical castration?

Chemical castration can have more dramatic effects than removing the testes would have, because chemical castration can counter the effects of the testosterone produced in the adrenal glands and reduce the levels of testosterone in the body to far below that of the average female. The actual results vary not only according to the drugs used and the dosage, but also according to the individual response. Some results are merely temporary and reversible, but if the treatment is continued long-term over a period of years they may become permanent. If an adult male is castrated, chemically or otherwise, the voice does not change.Assuming continued treatmentthe penis will lose the ability to become erect easily and will shrink. Over a period of years it may be reduced to a mere frazzle of skinthe testicles and scrotum will shrink in size, the testicles may eventually atrophy to almost nothingthere is a very distinct possiblity of female-type breast growthbody hair will reduce greatly and may disappear entirelyfacial hair growth rate will reduce although mustache and beard growth won’t disappear quickly. Over a period of years it may reduce to almosgt nothingthe body will tend to lay down more fat depositslibido will reduce drastically and may eventually disappear entirelyIn short, chemical castration effectively removes the characteristics which mark out an individual as male and tends to lead to the development of female secondary characteristics. The extent to which these changes occur can vary signficantly from individual to individual; many of the changes are reversible in the early stages of treatment but may become permanent if treatment is continued long enough. Whilst surgical castration is most certainly permanent in its effects, the effects of chemical castration tend to be much more complete in their obliteration of male characteristics and the development of female secondary characteristics.

How long after a dog is neutered do his testicles go away?

Neutering a dog involves removing his Testicles- so he definately does not have them anymore.
What you can see is the Scrotum- the bit of skin where the Testicles used to be.
It will take a while before the scrotum starts to shrivel up (its been a while since I've had a dog neutered so I cant quite remember) maybe a week to a couple of months. There will be a little 'tag' left between your dogs legs where the scrotum shrivels up.
If there is any sign of infection (redness, inflation of the area, etc) you should consult your vet straight away.

Years ago, when vets neutered dogs they would remove the scrotum and the testicles, now they just remove the testicles, and leave the scrotum intact.
