Explain Why The Southern Colonies And The Northern Colonies Developed Different Economies

Differences between Northern and Southern colonies prior to American Revolution?

Hey there fellas:) Could y'all please help me comprehend the differences between the North and South prior to the American Revolution. I understand the basic differences about how the South economy was based on slavery, unlike the North's, which resulted in Civil War; but I would love to understand a greater degree of detail about the following specific aspects:
A. What similarities existed between the North and South?
B. What role did Geography and Environment play in Emigration?
C. And finally, what part did economics, religion, and slavery play in the difference in the colonies?

I know my question might be a bit lengthy, but I would greatly admire all your time and help in aiding me to develop a more thorough understanding of this subject matter. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this:) I am grateful.

What are the difference between the Northern and Southern economies ?

The North was far more industrialized, containing 5 times as many factories and 10 times as many factory workers than the South. The North also had two thirds of the US railroad track mileage, and 96% of all US rolling stock. The economy of the North was therefore based on industry.

The economy of the South was based on agriculture, and in particular cotton production, which required a lot of land and was labour intensive. Some 3.5 million black slaves provided this labour.Every year, cotton exports were worth more than all other US exports combined.

As a result of these differences, the North developed an urban, egalitarian culture, the South developed a rural, landowner and slaveholder based culture.

How did the economies of new england and southern colonies differ?

New England's farmland was very poor, so their economy was based on trade. The southern colonies had mush better farmland and grew crops such as rice, tobacco, and indigo (all consistently high sellers back then) to make money.

What are some economic differences between the Early Northern and Southern colonies?

The major difference between the early Northern and Southern colonies is that the North was populated largely by small farms and larger towns and cities with mercantile and factory-based economies whereas the South was populated by large plantations and had relatively fewer large cities and few factories. By the time the Civil War happened a good portion of the agricultural products produced in the south i.e. cotton, tobacco, and sugar were being shipped to the north for processing in factories and then shipped back down to the south or abroad. The prices northern factories charged the southerners for the goods made with their products was a bone of contention between the two sections of the country that (to some degree) contributed to the rising tension of the period.

Another important differences was that the Southern economy was heavily reliant on slave labor. There were slaves used in the northern colonies as well but in much smaller numbers and they weren't essential to the economy like they were in the south. Plantations, especially tobacco and sugar cane plantations require high amounts of labor and it's much more cost effective to have slaves than paid laborers.

As mentioned previously the northern colonies had significantly more factories than the southern colonies and tended to trade in manufactured goods instead of raw products. Whereas the south traded raw products for manufactured goods, which later proved to be a major hitch during the civil war as they weren't able to supply their armies and population adequately with manufactured goods as they didn't produce many.

How did the Southern colonies differ from the Middle & New England colonies?

A frightening array of answers...

"The War between the States" would be the war in 1861-1865, and there were no colonies left by then. Mississippi was never a colony regardless of how many per capita millionaires they had.

Someone has already given the main difference, that the northern states were primarily industrial, and the southern states were primarily agrarian. The New England colonies were more educated (although the second oldest college in America, William and Mary, is in Virginia, and the fourth oldest college, Princeton, is in New Jersey). The middle colonies were more sympathetic toward the southern slavery movement. For that matter, the unofficial "border" between slave states and free states is that between Maryland and Pennsylvania, although Maryland was a slave state it remained in the Union, and West Virginia remained a slave state (and part of the Union) that seceded from Virginia when Virginia seceded from the Union, showing the deep division with respect to the slavery issue in the Middle colonies (then states when the Civil War started).

Socially, the larger cities, Philadelphia, Boston, etc. were the hubs of socialite colonial America. Atlanta was also a social hub. Since the majority of trade was via ship, large port towns were typically the center of social as well as economic activity.

Ethnicity was far more divided in colonial times; the New England colonies were almost exclusively caucasian, and as you travelled further South the diversity with african-americans became more of a factor.
