I used to babysit my sister in laws children (3 of them). She insisted that I get payed. I felt really uncomfortable about this but at the end of the day, if I were working somewhere else, I would be getting paid. Usually when you are staying overnight as a babysitter, you are paid as a lump sum and every hour is not counted. For a day plus night, I used to charge around AUD$120 per day, if the parents were going away for the week. It's hard, I understand, but don't get into any issues either of you. Money issues can cause so many problems in families, good friends.. -- By the way, you shouldn't be supplying all the daily necessities for the children, that is normally up to the parent/s. I say keep receipts for all expenses paid for the kids, so you can be reinbursed.

The total should look like one third of the cost is food. The second third should be you and your costs (don't forget to include things like fuel to the shops, electricity etc). The remaining third should be and hopefully your profit. you might need to look at personal insurance as well in case something goes wrong!

I hope that's not the best you can do. If I had a son who was in his 20s, then I would want him to move out of my home. If he can pay rent then I don't understand why he isn't surviving on his own by now since he can pay rent somewhere else. I don't live with my parents, and I finished all of my schooling at age 21. I don't know what your son is doing with his time. I really don't want to read about any excuses. Anyway he is your adult child, so you do whatever you want with him.

I'm going to be babysitting two boys ages 3 and 6 for 7 hours on a Friday evening. I love in Chandler, AZ. I am a junior in mechanical engineering, so I am very responsible. I cook for the kids, bring crafts to keep them busy, do the dishes after meals, and clean up after myself, so parents basically love me. I was thinking of $10/hr for both kids. Too high? Too low? The thing is, I have to be careful setting my rate, because this family is friends with another family whose kids I have watched before. I never set a rate and they underpaid me for all the work I did and how terribly their kids behaved. I don't think I can charge the families different rates, because they're friends, but one is more work than the other. What do I do?
