Which software to use for capturing video from my miniDV handycam?

I have a sparsely used 6year old Sony DCR-HC42E (PAL) Handycam which I don't plan on replacing anytime soon. I mostly store my videos on miniDVs and connect my camera to the TV whenever I want to watch them, this works fine for me since I do not use it too much.

But now I need to capture some videos on my laptop so I can share them with family (DVD). I even downgraded my older laptop to XP (Sony USB streaming is not compatible with Vista or Win-7).
I managed to capture and record some samples using Windows Movie Maker, and although the video quality is not too bad, I would like to use something more advanced which will allow me to choose higher resolution (semi-pro).

I know there are lot of video editing and capturing tools out there,, but I will appreciate a couple of good suggestions based on my requirements.
I want it to be user friendly. Windows Movie Maker seems too limited in things it can do (editing).
I want something that will capture the highest quality video preferably in raw format like avi (it is my understanding that MovieMaker is using up resources to convert the video to WMV in real time, correct me if I am wrong)
Since my camera records in widescreen, I want something than can capture in widescreen too. (MovieMaker shortens/squeezes the width of the video)

So basically I am looking for something that gives me little more control over recording & editing of my videos than MovieMaker.

I tried capturing with VLC player too. And although the picture quality was good, there was significant frame drop. I am sure I can play around with different configurations and find a good setting BUT it is not really user-friendly for an average computer user like me. I would like to utilize more of my time editing than trying to capture the video.

Freewares will be great but I am willing to spend on a good software too.
