Has A Black Person Ever Worn A Powdered Wig

Why is it considered more "normal" for black women to wear wigs for beautification purposes than it is for white or Asian women? Do you think it's becoming more commonplace and acceptable for white and Asian women to wear them nowadays?

Is it or is it an unproven assumption?I think that a lot of people notice what they believe are wigs or other types of hair pieces whether temporary clip-in or more longterm when it is a black woman than if the woman is white or Asian. Why? There is a stereotype that black women cannot grow long hair. There is a noticeable texture difference when black women choose to go from a naturally curly or wavy style more than when other women go for differences like a perm, straightening, etc.My white choir director got noticeable hair extensions after her second pregnancy. Her hair is naturally curly, but she typically straightens it. In addition, as a white woman her straightened hair that suddenly got at least 12 inches longer and thicker due to hair extensions is simply viewed as her hair. If a black woman has grown out long hair but straightens it, often people will assume that she is wearing extensions or a wig and will even comment on it.There is a double standard regarding women and hair, and it does not cut in favor of black women. Exhiblbit A, look at the assumption built into this question. How do we know how many women of any color are wearing something in addition to their own natural hair, and who is presumed to have grown the extra thick extra long mane? I live in an area with wig shops that are filled with white women and with salons catering to white women getting hair, nail and eyelash extensions. In fact, amongst the people I see regularly in church, work and otherwise, more of the white women have artificial hair, lashes and nails than the black ones.

Why did the men in the 1700's wear powdered wigs?

Alot of people have already answered fashion but actually the wigs had a purposeful usage as well. The white wigs were dusted with a fine white powder that was made from crushed turkey bones. This helped keep away ticks, mites and other vermin that might infest ones hair.

Fashion dictated that white wigs could not be worn until old age so younger men wore wigs of their actual hair color and shaved ther hair short and had the underside of their wigs dusted.

Often vermin did live in people's hair as at the time many people lived under the supersition that if they were to bathe they could die.

They believed a sort of barrier kept the soul close to body and if one was not careful it could be washed away. Full emerson bathing was done only once or twice yearly often in May. (The concept of a June bride became popular becasue the bride would still be fresh from her bath in May..eww)

The upper class not as superstitious as those below their station recongized the medicinal value of bathing and sought out sea bathing and spa bathing.

Though people did carry pleasant smelling herbs and flowers on their body and would wash the arms, legs, and face with water and soap balls.

Why do black women like to wear wigs?

Contrary to popular belief — most black women actually love their hair and many wear wigs and weaves as a protective measure. Plenty of articles have been written on the “return to natural” that many black women are participating in.It is well known that afro-textured hair can be very difficult to manage so many women prefer to get their hair braided back and simply install a wig or weave to allow their natural hair time to grow.Another reason that black women turn to wigs is due in part to the standards that society have placed on African American women to not wear their natural hair in the workplace as many employers won’t accept or even hire applicants with natural hair. Though this is changing at an astonishing rate and many companies have become more lenient on their “policies”, it is still a very prevalent and common issue.
