Has Anyone Used A Recovery Disc That Crashed Their Computer

Has anyone used Geek Squad for data recovery?

Unlike what people here have said, if it is important data do not under any circumstances attempt recovery yourself. Any extra time the drive is spent spinning or being worked on causes more damage to the drive and can irreperably damage your data.

Geek Squad's data recovery services for basic recoveries (level 1 and level 2, file system damage and minor disk problems) are performed in-house, and have an extremely high success rate given industry norms. However, for very bad drives (level 3 or higher) Geek Squad subcontracts with OnTrack to provide the service, and provide enough business to OnTrack to give you a pretty substantial discount (30% or so) off of those services. OnTrack is the biggest data recovery lab around, and most smaller labs ship their high level recovery jobs to OnTrack. They also do government work. Given what you've said so far, I would bet on your drive requiring a level 3 recovery.

So in short: Geek Squad's data recovery is on par or better than what you'll find locally, and is substantially cheaper as well.

My computer crashed, having trouble with vista re-installation?

These are your options for fixing your PC

1) Try and get a new recovery CD from gateway. Phone their support service and try to find out how to get one shipped (may cost $10 or lower)

2) Buy a new windows Vista disk and install that way $100+

3) Install Ubuntu! Ubuntu is (mostly) freedom software. it is free to use and pass on and had less memory retirements than Vista.

Download from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

you can get a ISO for free (like most Linux distros) from there. Once downloaded burn as a cd image using (free) CDBurnerXP

Download from
http://www.download.com/CDBurnerXP/3000-2646_4-10409086.html?tag=hed&cdlPid=10859164

Place the cd into the tray on your PC and it should start up into a LiceCD session of Ubuntu. You can try out Ubuntu without installing it at all on your Hard Drive.

If the cd won't boot edit the BIOS to allow the cd-rom to start before the hard drive (you can find tutorials online)

If you like Ubuntu install it to the Hard drive by clicking the install icon.

If you need help you can find it @

www.ubuntuforums.org
#ubuntu on irc.freenode.net (need a irc client try out mibbit)

And if you dont want to burn a ISO image you can request a (FREE!) Ubuntu CD with stickers from Ubuntu ShipIt!

Hp Pavilion a6130n recovery disk?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum...
Quote: Most HP and Compaq desktop PCs that ship with Windows Vista and XP do not come with recovery discs. Instead, they use a partition on the hard drive. Using a hard drive partition provides a convenient, more stable recovery solution. To access a hard drive recovery, turn on the computer and repeatedly press F10 (XP) or F11 (Vista) until a Recovery window opens." Unquote.

See page 29 on how to do the recovery.

Hope this helps.
