Head Laceration Re-opened

I just cut my head open?

If you did not faint or loss consciousness, you are going to be ok. . Blue (the cat) says if there are further changes other than bad spelling, go to the nearest ER. You have suffered a laceration and if the bleeding has stopped and it is a minor cut you are in the clear. If it is a big gash you may want to get stitches and an antibiotic. It is hard to tell from here. Use your best judgment. If you are worried GO to ER and be checked out.

My sons head cracked open... PLEASE HELP?

hmm..take him to the ER and see if the doctor can look at it and tell you if he needs stitches or not. My hosptial will do that (I work in an ER) especially if you do not have health insurance (make sure you tell them that!)
I can't tell you what to do over the computer, because I don't now what it looks like. But here are some facts: Heads bleed a lot. He MAY not have a concussion if he did not throw up or pass out (but there is a chance he still might, if he didn't do those things, just very slim). Do you have a pediatrition? Call them and see if they recommend wakin ghim up every so often during the night.
Also, what did he hit it on? if it's something metal, he might need a tetnus shot. So you'll have to bring him to the hospital or his doctors office.
Use your judgement. If he starts acting weird take him right away. If you can't wake him up call 911. If it starts bleeding a lot again or if it won't stop bleeding for hours, you probably should take him
But that's just my advice. I'm not a doctor or a nurse....good luck.
EDIT: You're not a bad mother. I see htis everyday. Kids get cuts on their head...it doesn't mean he'll die. Just relax. and Don't listen to anyone who hurts your feelings. People flip out and use the hospital as their doctor when they have a stupid cold. It's ridiculous. Just take it easy...and do what YOU think is right.

How long do head wounds (lacerations) take to heal?

If you had stitches put in, they have to come out in 7 to 10 days. Basically as long as the opening (of the wound) closes up, it’s not fully healed yet - germs can get in. Don’t wait too long (to have the sutures removed. They may have to be fished out as they may be embedded too deeply.)You’re supposed to use over-the-counter antibiotic ointment for the next three days, and after that, nothing (to let the incision / area dry).Be gentle when you wash your hair and when you dry your hair.Signs of infection: pain, swelling, discharge - fever (that’s not good).Best wishesAm a nurse.

How many stitches per inch for lacerations?

Doctors don't really plan "I'm going to give this person 5 stitches"-- they start stitching and stop when the wound is closed. However many stitches it takes to properly close the wound is how many they give. The location of the cut, the depth, and the width will all affect how many stitches are given, but a good rule of thumb is about 1 stitch per cm, or 5 stiches to an inch.

What happens if stitches are removed too soon?

If skin stitches are removed too soon, the skin and subcutaneous tissue will separate. This can be remedied by immediately re-approximating the edges together with “steristrip” tapes, available at most pharmacies. If the wound is left open and without a sterile dressing for about one hour or longer, it should simply be loosely packed with sterile gauze and a dressing bandage on top; this will allow it to heal by “secondary intention granulating tissue”. It will leave a scar.Do NOT confuse this with “DEHISCENCE”, which is complete separation of all layers of an abdominal wound and usually leads to evisceration (bowels falling out of the abdomen). This only happens in patients with poor protoplasm or if the deep stitches fail .

Can i use cortizone 10 on a cut? its too late for stitches and i want it to heal faster. please help.?

No - Don't use cortisone on open wounds. Cortisone works by inhibiting an immune response, which is why it is good for allergies, itches and eczema which are triggered by an over sensitivity of the immune response. If you put it on an open wound you will only interfere with the healing process.

In general wounds should be kept clean and free of dirt. You can dress them to keep the dirt out by using a plaster or an appropriate size gauze dressing. If you are going to dress it, change the dressing every 24 hours so as the wound does not fester. It will heal faster if it does not become infected.

I tend to use an iodine type spray called "savlon" I quite like it for minor wounds and spray it on everything, a bit of a personal preference but it is just an antiseptic really. Keep it clean and free of infection and it will heal quicker but don't use any steroid creams on it, that is not what they are for.

Question regarding laceration and dermabond...?

2 days ago I got a laceration in my forehead. I went to the hospital and they put two stitches INSIDE the laceration, and the outside was glued by Dermabond. Unfortunately, I'm very picky, and proceeded on to pick on the Dermabond, because I noticed I could peel off bit by bit. I peeled off a bit too much, and now there is a VERY SMALL, I'm talking 2x1 millimeter opening at the laceration...and if I sort of put pressure on the part where there IS a Dermabond, a little tiny amount of pus and blood come out..not alot though. Should I go to the hospital so they can do something about it or is that small opening nothing? Because I don't want my scar to be very disfigured.....

What can happen if a wound that needs stitches is not stitched, but merely bandaged? Will it simply take a longer time to heal?

When you have a cut in your skin (laceration) it allows dirt and germs to get in. So when you don't close it you are allowing a doorway for infection. Infection in the skin itself is one type of problem. It puts the skin at risk of dying. Infections that enter the bloodstream are a whole different magnitude. It puts your life at risk.If you put two flaps of skin next to each other then scar tissue will form and repair things. The bigger the gap the more scar tissue that needs to form. The longer it takes. The next phase is that once the scar tissue glues thing together the body remove the scar tissue and replaces it with skin. The problem is that at a certain point the "replacement" phase stops and you are left with some amount of scar tissue. We have no control of that. So the answer is to put the flap edges as close together as possible that way less scar tissue is formed.

How long does it take to die if being eaten alive?

Once an animal is down the predatory animals attack the abdomen where the large blood vessels are. Once the large blood vessels are opened and the animal bleeds out, it's dead. It's a process of about 5 minutes for a large animal.

Supposedly, animals that are subject to being eaten by other animals have a sort of mental anesthesia/analgesia that takes over when they're attacked and being consumed before they expire. How true that is, i'm not sure, but hopefully it is true.

Why is my open cut/wound not bleeding?

Not only being in police work I am also a paramedic which is required for my position, although I do not practice as a paramedic. There are many open wounds which don't bleed for various reasons. Cuts/wounds may not bleed because they were caused by a very sharp instrument and this causes the small vessels to clamp shut on their own which stops bleeding. There are many types of open wounds including gunshots where you can see an open wound where the projectile goes in and because of the force and heat it instantly closes off the blood vessels. However, an open wound under these circumstances are most likely bleeding on the inside of the body into the abdominal or chest cavity and is a very serious wound and is life threatening.  You can "bleed out" internally with no or very little blood oozing from the entry point.A lot of amputations such as having a leg or arm severed do not bleed on the outside and are bleeding substantially on the inside and are life threatening. Just because you don't see blood oozing from a cut or wound does not mean it is not life threatening.
