Help Me English Speakers Is My Grammar Correct

How do you feel when non-native English speakers correct your grammar?

Frustrated. When I was graduating as an English major, I have already self-studied grammar for 7 years.Right I was not grammatically perfect but I would say I'm right most of the time. Of course, stylistic issues or whether it sounds like natural English, I believe, are not grammar problems. But once a professor, who was from England, and who I admired greatly, had my paper all covered in red. He crossed and marked every tiny bits of a few paragraphs which have very few grammar problems except careless mistakes.Since high school, no teacher, not even native teachers, have made as many changes on my works. My dear professor wrote at the end of my essay that “Your grammar is very poor.”I almost wanted to rage, I still do now, but that is not completely an anger directed to my professor, but the very fact that it is so frustrating to get it “grammatically correct” in his ear. I imagine he wouldn't even be able to explain why I was wrong - but I was just too ashamed to ask.

Why do native-English speakers correct the grammar of non-native English speakers even though they understand them well enough?

Even non-English people do it!For the sake of knowledge and learning, of course!I have absolutely no qualms about correcting other’s grammar and spelling, and as such don't mind when others correct mine, because I'm a learner first and a teacher second.I do tend to laugh it off sometimes like “ah, yeah, does it really matter?” in a bit of a snide manner, but secretly I'm taking notes and telling myself “nope, dude, you fucked up. Try again next time!”And you should too!Just because I understand you doesn't mean it isn't uncomfortable to hear your grammatical errors. Also, for the sake of your own language learning, the one who knows “better” or “differently” should never hold his/her tongue, unless of course, it was a small grammatical error. But things like “I wanting to go with you, too!” just sounds painful to someone who speaks “Perfectly good English”, and they will usually say without thinking, “want.” Or “You mean want.”It's intended to be taken as a suggestion, and it's the polite thing to do to accept it is to say “Oh, right. I want to go with you, too!”Even if you don't believe they are right.

WHEN NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS FIX MY GRAMMAR: "When the North...", "Denis..."?

I have just finished these Exercises:

When the North and South finally LAID down their arms in 1865 at the end of the American Civil War they HAD FOUGHT for over four years and the South, which HAD WON several battles but LOST the war, WAS BEING economically exhausted. It WAS a tragedy that Abraham Lincoln, who HAD LED the North to victory and WOULD BE now ready to be generous to the South, DIDN’T SURVIVED to make the peace. Five days after General Lee HAD SURRENDERED at Appomattox, Lincoln WAS assassinated.

Denis IS ALWAYS RINGING me up when I am in the shower or washing my hair. The last time the phone RANG with me in the shower I DIDN’T ANSWER it. I LEARNED later that someone HAD RUNG me up to offer me a job which they then HAD OFFERED to someone else. I JUST TELL Denis that he MUST BE to blame for the fact that I HAVE MISSED a golden opportunity.

Peter LIVES in Nodnol, the capital of Mercia. At least, that's where he WAS LIVING when he last WROTE. In his letter he INVITED me to visit him, but as I HAVE HAD no answer to my last two letters I AM WONERING whether I should go or not. I HAVE ALSO HAD no reply from the consulate about the Mercian visa I APPLIED for two weeks ago. Although I WAS born in Mercia, I no longer HAD a Mercian passport.

WHEN NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS FIX MY GRAMMAR:" My son...", "So long..."?

Please read these exercises, I have just finished them!

"My son HAS BEEN STUDYING medicine for six years and WILL TAKE his final examinations in two months' time. Provided he PASSES them, he WILL SPECIALISE in psychiatry, which TAKES another two years' study at least. So he WON'T BE ready to practise full time until he HAVE BEEN nearly thirty. By then he WILL HAVE STUDIED for a total of eight or nine years and WILL EARN practically nothing. Until now his wife HAS BEEN WORKING and SUPPORTING him, but she IS EXPECTED a baby in four months and so she WILL GIVE UP her job soon. What on earth they WILL LIVE on when she HAVE STOPPED working I do not know. But they DON'T WORRY about it. My daughter-in-law says that they WILL MANAGE somehow, while my son says simply that he WILL QUALIFY as a psychiatrist however long it TAKES."

'So long as political leaders HAVE KEPT their heads a third world war WON'T BE inevitable.'
'Whether they HAVe KEPT their heads or not, they WILL FIND it almost impossible to prevent
world war unless they SUCCEED in abolishing the international arms trade.'
'My prediction is that providing a nuclear holocaust ISN'T GOING TO OCCUR by the end of the century, mankind WILL PASS the danger point.'
'You're too complacent. Even if your prediction IS PROVED correct, there WILL ALWAYS BE a risk
of man destroying himself.'

I did my exercises well? Please don't try to change THE CONTEXTS, VOCABULARIES.
Sincerely thank for helping.

WHEN NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS FIX MY GRAMMAR: "I hope Brenda...", "Willie.."?

I am learning English, I have just finished the following Exercises:
This Exercise covers the tenses and forms used for future time, namely the SIMPLE or PROGRESSIVE FUTURE, FUTURE PERFECT and PRESENT TENSES, and the going to form. For each verb in brackets use one of these.

A)I hope Brenda WILL STILL BE WORKING for me when I retire in six years' time. She IS GOING TO RETIRE herself a few years afterwards, because she WILL THEN HAVE BEEN sixty. She HAS BEEN WORKING for the firm for twenty years by then and HAVE QUALIFED for the firm's full pension. She says that when she retires she WILL HAVE BEEN WORKING as a business consultant. Perhaps she WILL EARN a lot more money doing that than she does now. At the moment she is in London on a special assignment, but she IS COMING back tomorrow, so if you look in then I WILL INTRODUCE you to her. CAN I TELL her you may come?

B)I AM SEEING Willie tomorrow at our weekly Japanese class, so I AM GOING TO TELL him what you have just told me. He WILL BE very pleased to know that you have passed your music exam. What ARE you DOING next? ARE you PREPARING for the higher grade?

I did my Exercises well? Please don't try to change the CONTEXTS, VOCABULARIES.
I Sincerely thank for all the helps from Native English speakers, those who are fluent English.

Native English speaker : Correct grammar mistakes please?

While not perfect, the letter you are sending is fine. You only need to worry so much about being perfect if you're sending a professional letter. If you have a personal relationship with this guy, then don't worry about it.

Here is my suggestion if you still want to improve it:

" Dear Michael,

Thank you for your kind New Year greeting and your family picture. I was very happy to see your family photo. I was sad I could not see you when you visited Germany. I am far from you, but wish for your happiness and good health. I look forward to seeing you someday."

I think that is OK if you have never seen him before. If you have seen him in person before, I would change the last sentence to: "I look forward to seeing you again someday.'

By the way, I used to live in Germany (1993-1995) and hope to return this summer to live there for several years. It is such a beautiful country.

Is grammar important while you speak English?

Some people think that correct English grammar matters only to teachers and is of no real importance in daily life. This is certainly not true. Grammar, regardless of the country or the language, is the foundation for communication. When a message is relayed with the correct grammar, it is easier to understand the purpose and meaning of that message. In order to communicate, a learner should know the grammar of the language. It is important to be able to express yourself, but this should be done in a way that people find easy to understand.Writing that is poorly punctuated and contains grammatical errors is difficult to read and sometimes impossible to understand. If the reader has to go back and re-read a sentence several times because they are not quite sure what it means, it spoils their reading experience and they are quite likely to misunderstand the point or even give up and not read any further. In linguistics, grammar is the set of structural rules which influences the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given language. It is the systematic study and description of a language, and it helps us to understand how words and their component parts combine to form sentences.
