Blackout Football Theme ?! Help!!?

What is a blackout football game?

There are two different interpretations of the term, but one is more common and more likely than the other:The first is related to the NFL's television contracts. One of the concerns of the NFL when they first started putting the game on TV was that people would stay home and watch the game on TV for free instead of buying tickets to watch the game at the stadium, thus depriving the team of ticket revenue. So the TV contracts have traditionally had a "blackout" clause where the game cannot be shown on local television unless all the tickets have sold out. For most teams, where season tickets have a waiting list and every game is a sellout, this isn't an issue but for a few struggling markets this occasionally becomes an issue. (Though sometimes the team itself solves the problem by "buying" the remaining unsold tickets -- either by moving money around internally, or by having an advertiser/business partner buy the tickets.) Even though the money for TV deals has gotten big enough that it's probably not necessary any more, the language still exists. (And as far as I know, college football has no such agreements.)Lately and more informally, it's also taken on the meaning of having the fans wear black clothing as a show of support for the team. This usually only happens during the playoffs (or in college, for games when the team is on national TV), and usually only with teams that already have black in their color scheme. Other teams might do a white-out where everyone wears white, or some other color that is dominant in the team's color scheme.
